Notably, he was one of the first practitioners to utilize fecal microbiota transplantation in recurring C. difficile treatment. He graduated from the City College of New York in 1965 with a Bachelor of Science in biology, cum laude. Dr. Brandt subsequently earned a Doctor of Medicine in 1968 from SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University.
Between 1968 and 1972, Dr. Brandt completed an internship, residency and fellowship at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City. From 1972 to 1974, he served his country in the United States Army Medical Corps. In 1974 he joined the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in the Bronx, NY, where he rose to the rank of Professor of Medicine in 1985 and Professor of Surgery in 1999. He served as Chief of the Gastroenterology Division from 2000 to 2009.
Dr. Brandt has further flourished with Montefiore Medical Center, beginning his tenure as an attending physician in the Division of Gastroenterology in 1974. He was additionally active as the hospital's Associate Director of Gastroenterology from 1980 to 1985, the Director from 1985 to 1999 and the Chief from 2000 to 2009. From 2015 the present, Dr. Brandt has worked as Head of Endoscopy at the Moses Campus of the Montefiore Medical Center, where he has maintained his involvement as the Director of Gastroenterology since 2016.
Dr. Brandt is the author of numerous articles for professional journals, as well as editor for the standard gastroenterology textbook utilized in many medical schools. A diplomate of the American Board of Internal Medicine and American Board of Gastroenterology, he is recognized as a Master of the American College of Gastroenterology. From 1972 to 1973 he was President of the American College of Gastroenterology. In light of his exceptional undertakings, Dr. Brandt has received The Distinguished Educator Award from both the American Gastroenterological Association and the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, the Clinical Achievement Award of the ACG, and the William Dock M.D. Master Teacher Award in Medicine of SUNY (Downstate). In 2018 Dr. Brandt was awarded the Alumni Association Achievement Medallion for Distinguished Service to American Medicine by Downstate Medical Center. Recently he was appointed an Honorary Police Surgeon for the New York Police Department.
