Dr. Douglas D. Alder was honored with a Governor's Award in Humanities from the state of Utah in 1991.

Aligned with Dixie State University since 1986, Dr. Alder served as the 14th president of the institution for seven years before retiring from his position and becoming a professor in the department of history in 1993. A tenured historian and educator since the early 1960's, he formerly taught European history at Utah State University in Logan, Utah, where he worked his way up from instructor to full professor and later held appointments as director of the National Defense Education Act History Institute, director of the experienced teacher fellowship program, associate director for instructional development and director of the honors program.
During his presidency, Dr. Alder successfully led fundraising efforts that led to the construction of the Dixie State University's Udvar-Hazy Business Building and the Gardner Student Center, the development of the College Inn, the completion of the Val A. Browning Learning Resource Center and additions to the Browning Library and the science building. He was also instrumental in the establishment of the DSC National Advisory Council.
As a historian, Dr. Alder founded a monthly lecture series for residents called Colleagues of the Dixie College Faculty. He also formed a reenactment of pioneer life at six different historical venues with tours for visitors and residents called Historic St. George Live! Additionally, he has served as an instructor and tour guide for the Road Scholar program, a three-hour historical and scenic tour of pioneer buildings that take place approximately 40 times per year for retirees from around the United States. From its founding in 1975 until 2010, Road Scholar operated under the name Elderhostel.
Dr. Alder served on numerous state boards such as the Utah Arts Council, the Washington County Historical Society and the Utah Humanities Council. Some of his community involvement included serving on the St. George City Preservation Committee and chairing the Washington County Library board. Dr. Alder also served his country in the Utah National Guard.
An alumnus of the University of Utah, Dr. Alder acquired a Bachelor of Arts in 1957 and Master of Arts in 1959. He later attended the University of Oregon where he acquired a Doctor of Philosophy in history in 1966.
A prolific author, Dr. Alder has written extensively on southern Utah history and Dixie State University history. He has published several books, including "Sons of Bear Lake," "Cache Valley: Essays on Her Past and People" and "All That Was Promised: History of the St. George Temple"; authored an autobiography titled "A Utah Life"; and has contributed numerous articles to professional publications, including the Utah Historical Quarterly, the Journal of Mormon History and The Sunstone Review. He also served on the editorial board of Dialogue: A Journal of Mormon Thought.
Aligned with several industry-related organizations throughout his career, Dr. Alder was a member and on the board of directors of the Utah State Historical Society; member, past president and former awards committee chairman of the Mormon History Association; and member and former awards committee member of the German Studies Association. He is a member of the Washington County Historical Society, the Celebrity Concert Series board and the Mesas governing board as well. He served on the Utah Arts Council and the Utah Humanities Council.
Dr. Alder received a Fulbright fellowship from the University of Oregon to complete his doctorate degree at the University of Vienna in Austria. Hired to teach at Utah State soon after, he was named Professor of Year by the university in 1967 and later received an Outstanding Faculty Award from Associated Students in 1981. He was also honored with a Governor's Award in Humanities from the state of Utah in 1991. Dr. Alder received a second Fulbright fellowship at the University of Bonn in Germany in 1980. A celebrated Marquis listee, he has been included in the 24th edition of Who's Who in the West.
