A respected agronomist and educator, Dr. Sij celebrates a near 40-year career that was solely devoted to the Texas Agricultural and Mechanical (Texas A&M) Experimental Station. An engineering research agency within the Texas Agricultural and Mechanical University System that is governed by the board of regents, he began his tenure with the aforementioned station in 1972 as an assistant professor of agronomy. Subsequently, Dr. Sij flourished as a full professor in 1983 before dedicating the rest of his teaching career on the Vernon, Texas, campus until his official retirement in 2010.
As a faculty member at Texas A&M, Dr. Sij had the opportunity to spearhead a project that involved the Texas State Soil and Water Conservation Board, the Texas Water Resources Institute and the Environmental Protection Agency. The goal of the project was to determine the environmental impact of bacteria in a watershed known as Buck Creek. Thanks to his team, the watershed was made safe and they received national recognition with awards for their success. During his tenure in education, Dr. Sij also provided his expertise as a steering committee member for the Kenaf Agricultural Research Coordinator Board in Beltsville, MD.
A seasoned researcher, Dr. Sij was additionally involved in the development of the soybean industry and alternate crops in Southeast Texas. He also partnered in releasing new soybean and soft-red winter wheat varieties and promoted the development of subsurface drip irrigation and minimum-tillage in Texas. He has notably authored or co-authored over 100 articles in various professional journals on his work. Dr. Sij also served the Agronomy Journal as an associate editor from 1987 to 1991 and a technical editor from 1992 to 1994.
Dr. Sij is a former member of the Young Men's Business League of Beaumont. A non-profit organization, the League strives to improve the general welfare of the city by developing and pursuing programs that maintain and improve academic facilities, while also undertaking activities that enhance the agricultural and commercial resources of the area. To stay current in his field, Dr. Sij has been affiliated with the American Society of Agronomy, the Crop Sciences Society and the Council for Agricultural Science and Technology.
Dr. Sij initially pursued an education at Eastern Illinois University, from which he acquired a Bachelor of Science in education in 1965. While pursuing his degree, he became interested in life sciences, specifically botany, and enrolled in zoology, entomology and other life science courses. Upon graduating, Dr. Sij concluded his studies at the Ohio State University, earning a Master of Science in 1967 and a Doctor of Philosophy in 1971.
Dr. Sij was notably recognized as a fellow of the Committee on Institutional Cooperation between 1967 and 1971. He was also presented with the Soybean Research Tour Award from the American Soybean Association and ICI Americas in 1985.
