From 1971 to 1973, Dr. Sharp was a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Iowa, becoming an assistant instructor in anatomy and instructor in radiology for the 1972-73 academic years. He joined the University of Nebraska Medical Center in I 973 as an assistant professor of anatomy, rising to associate professor in I 975 and professor of cell biology, anatomy, radiology and radiation oncology in 1978. He continues to teach and conduct research at the University of Nebraska.
Dr. Sharp's basic research throughout the 1980-90s on bone marrow transplantation with clinical colleagues around the world, particularly Dr. A Kessinger, led to the development of protocols to successfully harvest stem cells from blood, revolutionizing the harvesting of donor stem cells. He has worked on the development of novel drugs for use in pediatric cancer treatment and processes for the detection of occult tumor cells in bone marrow and blood. He has contributed more than 300 articles to professional publications and numerous chapters to books.
