A graduate of the University of Arkansas, Dr. Riggs received a Bachelor of Science in agriculture in 1954, as well as a Master of Science in plant pathology in 1956. Subsequently, he attended North Carolina State University, where he earned a Doctor of Philosophy in plant pathology in 1958. During this time, he began his career as a graduate assistant with the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville in 1954, further progressing to the roles of an assistant professor and an associate professor before accepting the role of a full professor, a position he has held since 1968.
While attending North Carolina State University, he also served as a graduate assistant from 1955 to 1958. As a plant pathology and nematology educator and researcher, Dr. Riggs also served as the chair of faculty for the Dale Bumpers College of Agricultural, Food and Life Sciences with the University of Arkansas in 1999. He has contributed articles to professional journals and edited the publications "Nematology in the Southern United States" and "Biology and Management of the Soybean Cyst Nematode."
As a testament to his success, Dr. Riggs has been the recipient of several accolades and honors. These include the John White Award from the College of Agriculture and Home Economics, the Honor Award for research in environmental protection from the United States Department of Agriculture, the Outstanding Researcher Award from the Arkansas Agricultural Extension Specialists, a Faculty Award from Spitze Land-Grant University and the Meritorious Service Award from the United Soybean Board.
To remain aware of changes in the field, Dr. Riggs maintains affiliation with the Society of Nematologists, where he previously served as vice president, president-elect, president and editor-in-chief of their journal. He currently is a fellow of the organization. Likewise, he is a member of the American Phytopathological Society, the Southern Soybean Disease Workers, from whom he received a Distinguished Service Award, the University Arkansas Alumni Association, the Organization of Nematologists of Tropical America, Sigma Xi and Gamma Sigma Delta.
Married to Jennie Lee Willis since 1954, Dr. Riggs has four children, four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. A native of Pocahontas, AR, he currently resides in Fayetteville. Outside of his professional career, he enjoys collecting coins, photography and puzzles.
