An award-winning educator, Dr. Harner has been a professor of otolaryngology at the Mayo Medical Clinic where he has been teaching courses since 1994. He formerly served for nine years in the U.S. Army, commissioned as a second lieutenant in 1964 and advancing through the grades to the rank of a major. While in the military, he interned at the Brooke Army Hospital in San Antonio, Texas, completed a surgical training at Reynolds Army Hospital in Fort Sill, Oklahoma, and an otolaryngology residency at Fitzsimons Army Hospital in Denver. He subsequently excelled as an assistant chief of otolaryngology at Letterman Army Hospital in San Francisco between 1970 and 1973.
An alumnus of Washington University, Dr. Harner received a Bachelor of Arts in 1962. Following this achievement, he completed a Doctor of Medicine at the University of Missouri in 1965. He is certified through the Board of Otolaryngology. A seasoned researcher in his field, he has contributed numerous articles to scholarly journals like JAMA Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery and Archives of Otolaryngology. Dr. Harner has also contributed chapters to books in his area of expertise, including the 1996 edition of "Acoustic Neuroma and Skull Base Surgery."
Dr. Harner is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons, the American Academy of Otolaryngology, the American Otologic Rhinologic and Laryngologic, the American Neurotology Society as president and the American Otologic Society. Among other industry-related organizations, he is a member of the American Medical Association, the Minnesota Medical Association, the Zumbro Valley Medical Association and the Society University Otolaryngologists, where he was president. Dr. Harner was also active on the advisory board of the Acoustic Neuroma Association and maintained activity as the program chairman of the American Academy of Otolaryngology for six years.
A community leader for many years, Dr. Harner first served on the board of directors of Hiawatha Homes in Rochester between 1980 and 1994 and later served as secretary, vice president and president. He was also a member of the Governor's Council on Developmental Disability and was a volunteer for Channel One and the Rochester Public Library.
