Dr. Rubin is renowned as a retired pathologist with more than 35 years of excellence in her field to her credit. She pursued an education at the SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University, initially intending to pursue a career in psychiatry, but quickly became disillusioned with the state of the field and refocused her ambitions on brain research. She subsequently earned a Doctor of Medicine through the State University of New York in 1958, and became a resident in Pathology at the N.Y.U.-Bellevue Medical Center. Subsequently she pursued postdoctoral work in brain chemistry at the Columbia Psychiatric Institute as an NIH fellow. At the end of her fellowship and due to the illness of her mentor, Dr. Heinrich Waelsch, Dr. Rubin chose to enter the field of pathology rather than remain in academic research.
Dr. Rubin began her career as a staff pathologist at Maimonides-Coney Island Medical Center, Brooklyn, New York, from 1964 to 1967. From 1967 to 1968, she briefly served as an associate pathologist at the Bronx-Lebanon Hospital Center before joining Chilton Memorial Hospital in Pompton Plains, NJ, where she would remain from 1968 to 1997. Between 1973 and 1989, Dr. Rubin also found success as the director of the MDS Laboratory in Wayne, NJ.
In addition to her medical endeavors, Dr. Rubin worked as a clinical instructor of pathology at the State University of New York from 1964 to 1967 and the Albert Einstein School of Medicine, Bronx, New York, from 1967 to 1968. She is board-certified in anatomic pathology and clinical pathology, and has contributed articles to several publications in her field. A fellow of the College of American Pathologists, Dr. Rubin is proud to be a longtime member of the American Medical Women's Association and the National Council of Women's Health, where she was formerly active as a president.
