Mr. Mirza is an aerospace engineer with more than 40 years of innovation in his field. As a child, he was fascinated with learning how things worked, and showed early talent in physics and engineering. He attended Gordon College, Rawalpindi, earning a Bachelor of Science in physics and mathematics in 1968, and continued his education with a Master of Science in physics from Government College University, Lahore, Pakistan. Trained as a physicist, Mr. Mirza is proud of the flexibility and creativity that it took to cross over into engineering.
From 1971 until 1979, Mr. Mirza worked as a test engineer for Bendix Corporation in Windsor, Ontario. He later became an instrumentation engineering manager for National Technical Systems, Inc. in Saugus, CA, between 1979 and 1982. From 1982 to 1984, Mr. Mirza was a senior instrumentation engineer for Wyle Laboratories in Norco, CA, and a lead instrumentation engineer for Thiokol Corporation in Brigham, UT, from 1987 until 1988. He recalls his time at Thiokol Corporation, testing rocket motors in the wake of the Challenger disaster, to be some of the most meaningful work of his career. From 1988 until 1994, Mr. Mirza consulted with various aerospace companies as an independent consultant.
From 1994 until 2017, Mr. Mirza maintained activity as a senior staff engineer at the Boeing Satellite Development Center in El Segundo, CA. He is an FAA-certified pilot, and enjoys flying fixed-wing aircraft and swimming in his leisure time. Mr. Mirza remains active in various professional organizations and societies, and is a fellow of the Institute for the Advancement of Engineering and an associate fellow of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics.
