Richard Webb Haymaker, PhD, Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

Dr. Haymaker has been endorsed by Marquis Who's Who as a leader in the field of physics

BATON ROUGE, LA, January 10, 2020 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Marquis Who's Who, the world's premier publisher of biographical profiles, is proud to present Richard Webb Haymaker, PhD, with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. An accomplished listee, Dr. Haymaker celebrates many years' experience in his professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes he has accrued in his field. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Richard Webb Riemenschneider Haymaker, PhD, has accumulated more than 35 years of expertise in academia, beginning in 1967 as an assistant research physicist at the University of California Santa Barbara. Subsequently hired by Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, he was soon after acquired by Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge just two years later. Beginning his tenure as an assistant professor, Dr. Haymaker later became a full professor in 1982 and earned the distinguished title of a professor emeritus in 2003.

In addition to his full-time commitments as an educator, Dr. Haymaker worked as a visiting staff member at the Los Alamos National Laboratory between 1977 and 1978. Shortly thereafter, he served as a visiting scientist at the KEK National Laboratory, a Japanese organization whose purpose is to operate the largest particle physics laboratory in Japan, and the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, a public research institution located in Mumbai, India, that is dedicated to basic research in mathematics and the sciences. Renowned for his advanced research on dynamics symmetry, space structure of confining strings and color flux in SU lattice gauge theory, Dr. Haymaker also has authored and co-authored approximately 100 physics articles. Among other scholarly journals, he has been published in the Physical Review, Acta Physica Polonica, Physics Letters, Nuclear Physics and Reviste Nuovo Cimento.

Passionate about community involvement, Dr. Haymaker excelled as the 2003-2006 president of the Baton Rouge Council on Human Relations. The organization honored him for his contributions with the 2013 Powell-Reznikoff Humanitarian Award. And he and his wife received the Wade Mackie Peacemaking Award from Bienville House in 1994. Most notably, Dr. Haymaker has been extremely active in his efforts in advocating for the end of gun violence, (documented in personal papers at the LSU library, Mss 4698).

He and his wife took in a 16 year old Japanese AFS exchange student who was tragically killed. On his way to a fellow AFS Japanese student's home for a Halloween party with Dr. Haymaker's son, the boys approached the front door of the wrong house without costumes and the home owner emerged and fatally shot him. This racial incident, with its subsequent acquittal of the shooter, made worldwide attention. In the subsequent civil trial, the judge declared that there was no fault by anyone except the shooter and declared that Yoshi would have been known as an "All American Boy" had he been an American.

In preparation for his primary professional pursuits, Dr. Haymaker received a Bachelor of Arts in physics from Carleton College in 1961, followed by a Doctor of Philosophy in physics from the University of California Berkeley in 1967. Following this achievement, in order to remain aware of developments in his field, Dr. Haymaker has enjoyed a lasting membership with the American Physical Society. He is also a member of Phi Beta Kappa and the Sigma Xi Scientific Research Honor Society. Securing a continued grant from the United States Department of Energy from 1976 and 2013, Dr. Haymaker is also a celebrated Marquis listee, who has been featured in the first edition of Who's Who in Science and Engineering. In addition, he is the recipient of the prestigious Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award, the highest honor conferred by Marquis Who's Who.

Dr. Haymaker cites a handful of influences in his life which inspired him and helped him produce papers relating to physics. His inspirations and mentors throughout his career include Professors Robert Kolenkow, Charles Schwartz, Richard Blankenbeckler and Peter Carruthers. Dr. Haymaker is a loving grandfather to three grandchildren, Arvid, Emil and Rona, and a proud father to his daughter and son, Elizabeth and Webb. He and his wife, Holley Galland Haymaker, have been married for 49 years. In the coming years, he looks forward to welcoming new grandchildren into his family.
