A professor and chairman in the department of physiology at Tulane University since 1988, Dr. Navar previously held research and teaching appointments at the University of Alabama in Birmingham for 14 years and the University of Mississippi in Jackson for eight years. Presently, he serves as the director of the Center of Biomedical Research Excellence in Hypertension and Renal Biology at Tulane as of 2001. During 2014, Dr. Navar also notably found success as the Robert M. Hearin distinguished lecturer at the University of Mississippi Medical Center.
Dr. Navar has enjoyed a successful career conducting research in the areas of renal physiology, hypertension, cardiovascular and the kidney, specifically focusing on the regulation of renal hemodynamics, renal autoregulation and on the role of the renin-angiotensin system in the regulation of renal function and in the pathophysiology of hypertension. He has notably presented his research at national and international meetings with over 500 abstracts and presentations. Moreover, Dr. Navar has received numerous grants from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases and the National Institute of General Medical Sciences for his work.
As a result of his many years of research, Dr. Navar has authored numerous chapters to books, published over 400 articles in scholarly journals and served on various journal editorial boards. He has served as a member of the editorial board for the American Journal of Physiology, and is currently a consultant editor for Hypertension, and an editorial board member for the American Journal of Medical Sciences, the Annals of Clinical and Experimental Hypertension and the Journal of Clinical Hypertension. Leading numerous initiatives in his field over the years, Dr. Navar was on the board of directors of the Federation of American Societies Experimental Biology from 1997 to 2001 and the Consortium for Southeastern Hypertension Control between 1998 and 2000. He was also active with the National Institutes of Health, initially serving on the advisory board of the center for science review from 1998 until 1999, as a member of the cardiovascular and renal study section between 1998 and 2000 and as the chairman from 2000 to 2002.
Dr. Navar received a Bachelor of Science at Texas Agricultural and Mechanical University in 1962, followed by a Doctor of Philosophy at the University of Mississippi. He subsequently completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Mississippi and a second fellowship at Duke University. Aligned with numerous professional organizations, Dr. Navar is a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and a past president of the Association of Chairs of Departments of Physiology and the American Physiological Society. Other memberships to his credit include the American Society of Hypertension, the International Society of Nephrology and the American Heart Association.
The recipient of over a dozen awards, Dr. Navar more recently accepted such accolades as an SSCI Mentor of the Year Award in 2018, an E. Eric Muirhead Hypertension Research Day Lecturer Award from the University of Tennessee Health Science Center in 2014 and an Inaugural Oliver Fund Award from Tulane University in 2013. He also received the Walter B. Cannon Award from the American Physiological Society in 2012, a Ray G. Daggs Award in 2008, and a Robert W. Berliner Award for excellence in renal physiology in 2007.
