With more than 40 years of experience in health care to her credit, Ms. Smith has become an authority in her industry. She began her career path as a member of the pediatrics staff at Jefferson University Hospital from 1939 until 1941. She then served as head nurse of the urology ward from 1941 to 1942, then supervisor of the surgical floor at the hospital from 1942 to 1943. Later, in 1957, she became a public health nurse at the Baltimore County Health Department until 1985. In 1971, she found success being the first named "public health nursing supervisor for special schools needs" in the Baltimore County Department of Health. She retired in 1985.
Prior to embarking on her professional journey as an esteemed nurse and an educator, Ms. Smith was certified as a registered nurse at the Jefferson Hospital School of Nursing in 1940. In subsequent years, she earned a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of Maryland in 1972. Ms. Smith concluded her academic efforts in 1976, graduating from Loyola University with a Master of Education.
Outside of her responsibilities as a nurse, Ms. Smith remains informed of the changes and advancements in her industry through relevant organizations. She is a member of the American Nurses Association, the American Association of University Women, the Maryland Nurses Association, the University of Maryland School of Nursing Alumni Association, the Loyola University Alumni Association, and the Jefferson Hospital School of Nursing Alumni Association. She married her husband, Woodward R. Smith, in 1940, and together they are the proud parents of three children. In her free time, Ms. Smith enjoys photography and speaking with senior citizens about her worldwide travels and experiences there. Leveraging her deep well of creativity, she authored the booklet "Girl Talk" in 1968.
One of the proudest moments of Ms. Smith's career was going back to school and receiving her master's degree. In light of her many accomplishments in the field, she has received numerous accolades. Ms. Smith was presented with the Maryland Nurse of the Year Award from the March of Dimes in 1979, and Who's Who of American Women.
