Mr. Clarke is a writer and retired language educator with more than 30 years of service to his discipline. He completed a Bachelor of Science in education at the State University of New York at Geneseo in 1966, and earned a Master of Arts from Bowling Green State University in 1968. Mr. Clarke served his country to the rank of lieutenant within the U.S. Navy Reserves from 1968 until 1970.
Between 1970 and 1999, Mr. Clarke taught English language arts at E.J. Wilson High School in Spencerport. He is licensed as a secondary educator in the state of New York, and has received numerous accolades for his teaching, including a 1991 Excellence in Secondary School Teaching Award from the University of Rochester Graduate School of Education and Human Development. Mr. Clarke considers the highlight of his career to have been guiding students through understanding challenging concepts, and treasures the moments when he observed them beginning to grasp and apply new concepts.
Mr. Clarke, a passionate scholar of genealogy and New England history, is the author of numerous works on Rhode Island and New York families of note. His works include "The Rev. Sylvanus Holly: His Ancestors and Descendants," published in 2018, and "Descendants of Joseph Clarke, a Founder of Rhode Island, in Lewis County, New York" in 2019, as well as journal articles for such publications as the "New York Researcher." Mr. Clarke has been an invited speaker to conferences on education and writing, as well as genre writing symposia, and is the recipient of a 1986 Edgar Allan Poe Special Award from the Mystery Writers of America. He is proud to have spearheaded public records digitization efforts as a member of the Rochester Friends of the Public Library, and is an active member in the Rochester Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution and the Rochester Genealogical Society.
