Ms. Danneffel Mandelkorn is a renowned expert in eye banking and preservation of corneal tissue for transplantation with more than 25 years of innovation in her field. She initially pursued an education at the University of Michigan, completing coursework from 1968 to 1970 before graduating from Wayne State University in 1974 with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. Ms. Mandelkorn concluded her academic efforts with further postgraduate coursework in nursing at Wayne State University in 1985.
Ms. Danneffel Mandelkorn entered the field of eye banking in 1982 when she was hired by the Michigan Eye Bank at the Kresge Eye Institute at Wayne State University and the University of Michigan Kellogg Eye Center in Ann Arbor to increase eye donation in local hospitals through education of nurses and physicians. From 1987 to 1990, Ms. Danneffel Mandelkorn began her career as vice president of the Michigan Eye Bank. She subsequently was appointed Executive Director of the Sierra Regional Eye and Tissue Bank at UC Davis Medical Center from 1990 to 1995. She was then selected out of 100 applicants Executive Director of the Lions Eye Bank of Texas at Baylor College of Medicine, at that time the largest eye bank in the world, from 1995 to 2000, and an instructor of ophthalmology at Baylor College of Medicine from 1997 to 2000. Ms. Danneffel Mandelkorn later served as a consultant for the Eye Bank Association of America in Fort Myers from 2000 to 2002.
During her time in the eye banking field, Ms. Danneffel Mandelkorn was involved in research such as assessing knowledge and attitudes of health care professionals about organ donation; and assessing risk factors of donors for AIDS and Hepatitis B and C. She served as a member of the Eye Bank Association of America's Medical Standards Committee, assisting in the updating and addition of emerging critical standards for HIV and Hepatitis B and C donor screening. The highlight of Ms. Danneffel Mandlkorn's career was her election as the Chair of the internationally renowned Eye Bank Association of America (established in 1961) whose office is in Washington, D.C. from 1996-1998. Prior to this she served as a member of the Board of Directors from 1989-2000 and was a member of the EBAA Medical Standards Advisory Board from 1987 to 2000. She chaired the EBAA Accreditation Committee from 1992-1994; this committee was responsible for the inspection and accreditation of all member eye banks in the United States and Canada. Ms. Danneffel Mandelkorn was also a member of the ARVO (Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology), AATB (American Association of Tissue Banks). She was an invited participant to the Surgeon General's Task Force for Increasing Organ Donation held in Washington, D.C., in July 1991. Ms. Danneffel Mandelkorn authored several journal articles, book chapters, and presented poster abstracts on her research. She was proud to participate in eye banking during a time of rapid growth in the U.S. witnessing advances to meet global corneal needs. Ms. Danneffel Mandelkorn lectured and taught eye banking techniques in countries such as Africa, India and Pakistan. In 2002, Ms. Danneffel Mandelkorn was awarded the prestigious Leonard Heise Award from the Eye Bank Association of America.
