Dr. Sherwood C. Frey Jr. received an All University Teaching Award from the University of Virginia in 2002 and was the very first recipient of the University of Virginia Mentorship Award in 2007.

Dr. Frey distinguished himself as an emeritus Ethyl Corporation professor of business administration in the Darden School of Business at the University of Virginia, serving for more than 30 years in his role until retirement in 2010. During his tenure, he notably served as a faculty advisor to the black business students' forum and honor committee, was a visiting professor at the Ivey Business School in London, Ontario, was a member of the board of several university organizations and was involved with the MBA and executive development programs. In addition, he was a member of the faculty of the International Teachers Program in Versailles, London and Milan. For much of his career, Dr. Frey also maintained his own consulting company, Sherwood C. Frey Jr. and Associates between 1979 and 2019.
Prior to his lengthy career at the University of Virginia, Dr. Frey was a member of the faculty of the Harvard Business School from 1970 to 1979. Prior to entering academia, Dr. Frey was a consultant for the U.S. Department of Defense in the Pentagon in Washington. He has taught, researched, written and consulted in the areas of negotiation and the management of risks in major capital commitments. As a result of his years of research, he has contributed multiple articles to various scholarly journals on the topics of management science and operations research. Additionally, Dr. Frey authored three textbooks, "Quantitative Business Analysis: Text and Cases," "Quantitative Business Analysis Casebook" and "Quantitative Methods in Management."
An alumnus of the University of California, Berkeley, Dr. Frey received a Bachelor of Arts in mathematics in 1964 and a Master of Science in engineering science in 1965. He later earned a Doctor of Philosophy in operations research at The Johns Hopkins University in 1969. Dr. Frey received several recognitions for his teachings and service to the University of Virginia and Darden School of Business. He received an All University Teaching Award from the University of Virginia in 2002 and was the very first recipient of the University of Virginia Mentorship Award in 2007. Dr. Frey also received the Raven Award in 2011 for his contributions to the university.
