Mr. Thornton has garnered a laudable reputation as an interior architectural designer responsible for work on high-profile hospitality and commercial properties throughout the world. His passion for art began as a child, during which he drew on the walls of the barn at his family's ranch in Idaho. He initially pursued a career in agriculture before pursuing additional education in art and architecture. Throughout the late 1950s and early 1960s, Mr. Thornton completed coursework at Weber State College, the Colorado Institute of Art, and the ArtCenter School of Design.
Mr. Thornton excelled as a conceptual architectural designer, having worked at such firms as Howard Perlman Architects of Las Vegas, Nevada, and Bergman, Walls and Youngblood, Ltd., of Las Vegas. He later transitioned to a consulting role on behalf of Howard Perlman Architects. He also worked as an illustrator for Victor Gruen and Associates and Carlos Diniz Associates, before becoming a senior associate for Arthur Gensler Associates from 1972 until 1975. His most prestigious work has included the interiors of two private jets owned by Frank Sinatra and the design of King Fahd of Saudi Arabia's summer palace in Taif, Saudi Arabia.
Mr. Thornton was the recipient of numerous accolades for his work, including a 1984 IMI design award for the Investment Mortgage International building in San Francisco, and 1974 American Architects design awards for the Mountain Bell Training Center and Denver Sporting House interiors. His work on a mural for the interior of the Salt Lake City temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in 1962 remained a career highlight throughout his life. Mr. Thornton was inducted into the Colorado Institute of Art Hall of Fame in 1995.
