Dr. Oppenheim is a celebrated orthopedic surgeon who retired from her clinical practice in 2015. She was affiliated with Cigna Health Plans of California, Permanente Medical Association of Texas, Greeley Orthopaedic Associates, and Front Range Orthopaedics of Colorado Springs. She notably contributed to various communities for over 13 years as a traveling doctor. In retirement, Dr. Oppenheim continues to work part-time completing disability evaluations for Workers Comp in Texas.
In 1999, Dr. Oppenheim contributed to the Foot and Ankle International, the official monthly medical journal of the American Orthopedic Foot & Ankle Society. Published in 1999, her co-authored article was titled "Technique Tip: Use of the Lamina Spreader for the Reduction of the Subtalar Joint During Hindfoot Surgery." Affiliated with the Greenberg Center for Learning and Tolerance, she joined the board in 2017. The Center, located in Colorado Springs, was established to promote learning, understanding and acceptance that honors the cultural dignity of all mankind. Dr. Oppenheim is also a member of the board of directors of Temple Shalom in Colorado Springs and a member of several other organizations as a program committee member.
Dr. Oppenheim was born and raised in Detroit and is an alumnus of the University of Michigan, where she received a Bachelor of Science in Education with a major in Physical Education and minors in Biology and Spanish. After teaching for four years at New Trier Township High School West in Northfield, Illinois, she returned to the University of Michigan to complete a Master of Science in Education and graduated with honors from the program. While in graduate school, Dr. Oppenheim became interested in exercise physiology and sports medicine and, after teaching for another two years, pursued a Doctor of Medicine at the University of Illinois, graduating in 1979. Additional educational pursuits include a residency in orthopedic surgery at the University of Oklahoma and the University of Missouri in Kansas City, a clinical fellowship in orthopedic trauma surgery at the University of Toronto and Sunnybrook Hospital, two foot and ankle fellowships, one with the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School and the other with San Antonio Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Associates, and a fellowship at the Carolina Arthroscopy and Knee Institute in arthroscopic surgery of the knee and shoulder.
Dr. Oppenheim is a fellow of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons and a fellow of the American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society. She is a member of the Clinical Orthopedic Society and the Western Orthopedic Association. In 1965, she was awarded the William F. Branstrom Award by the University of Michigan. She also received a Student Leadership Award from the University of Illinois in 1979, was president of the Medical Student Council during her senior year of medical school, and was honored with the Rex Diveley Award for a paper that she wrote on fractures of the calcaneus during her residency. A celebrated Marquis listee, Dr. Oppenheim has been featured in Who's Who of American Women and Who's Who of Emerging Leaders in America.
