A board-certified ophthalmologist, Dr. Cowden completed a corneal and external ocular disease fellowship at the University of Florida in 1973. Prior to embarking on his professional path, Dr. Cowden graduated from Michigan State University in 1960, obtained a Doctor of Medicine Degree from the University of Michigan Medical School in 1964 and completed his residency, in ophthalmology at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in 1969. He served in the United States Army for 8 years and received a Distinguished Service Award. In 1993, he joined the professional staff at the Kresge Eye Institute of Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan. He served as the Residency Program Director, Vice-Chairman of the Department, published many research articles, and became a full academic professor. During this time, he served as the medical director of the Michigan Eye Bank and Transplantation Center in Detroit. He was elected President of the Michigan Ophthalmology Society- a position that he served for two years.
In 1993, Dr. Cowden accepted the invitation to serve as Chairman of the Department of Ophthalmology at the University of Missouri. As the Roy E. Mason distinguished Professor of Ophthalmology, Dr. Cowden excelled as Chair of the Mason Eye Institute for 20 years. He was a consultant for Truman Memorial Veterans Hospital and University Hospitals in Columbia, Missouri. He was also President of the Missouri Ophthalmology Association and Medical Director of the Heartland Eye Bank. An unusual honor to be the President of two State Organizations and Medical Director of two Eye Banks.

He has been active in international teaching in many foreign countries, often with "Project Orbis"- an airplane equipped to provide eye care and teach ophthalmologists the latest developments in the field.
Dr. Cowden's research interest has been in the field of refractive surgery, cornea endothelium and keratoprosthesis- an artificial cornea. To remain aware of developments in the field, Dr. Cowden maintains affiliation with a number of professional organizations. To mention a few, he is a fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, and the American College of Surgeons he is also a member of the American Medical Association, the International Society of Refractive Surgery, the Eye Bank Association of America, the Michigan Society of Eye Physicians and Surgeons, and the Missouri Society of Eye Physicians and Surgeons. Throughout his career, Dr. Cowden has received many honors- just a few include: Outstanding Doctor of the Year Award, Honorary Alumni Award from the University of Missouri, Outstanding Ophthalmologist-State of Missouri Award.
Dr. Cowden is married to Patricia Rakestraw Cowden and has 7 children.
