After graduating from the University of Delaware with a degree in civil engineering, Dr. Pettyjohn was commissioned in the U.S. Army as a second lieutenant and served in Korea.
Upon his return from Korea, Dr. Pettyjohn pursued his dream of becoming a doctor attending medical school at Hahnemann University. Upon graduation, he returned to the U.S. Army Medical Corps. During his military service, he advanced through the grades to the rank of Colonel in the Army Medical Corps. Dr. Pettyjohn served as a flight surgeon in the 17th Combat Aviation Group in Vietnam in 1966 and as cardiologist and flight surgeon for the return of POWs from Hanoi in 1973. He was recalled to active duty in 1991 and served as cardiologist for the return of the POWS from the Gulf War. He retired from active duty in 1986. In 2008, Dr. Pettyjohn returned to active duty military service serving during Operation Enduring Freedom in Tikrit, Iraq at 74 years old. During his military career, he was awarded the Combat Medical Badge, the Master Flight Surgeon Badge, the Legion of Merit, the Bronze Star, the Meritorious Service Medal and the Air Medal with two oak leaf clusters.
Following his retirement from active duty in 1986, he went on to excel as a clinician and medical educator at the University of South Alabama College of Medicine. He served as Chief, Division of Cardiology, and as Chairman of the Department of Emergency Medicine. Dr. Pettyjohn has also held staff privileges at several other medical institutions throughout his career, including the University of South Alabama Medical Center and the West Florida Regional Medical Center.
Dr. Pettyjohn has maintained affiliation with the American College of Physicians, the American College of Cardiology, the American College of Chest Physicians, the American College of Preventive Medicine, the American Heart Association, the Aerospace Medical Association, the American College of Emergency Physicians, the Society for Academic Emergency Medicine, and the International Academy of Aviation and Space Medicine.
