Since joining the firm in 1986, he has practiced in the areas of civil litigation, with an emphasis on commercial and intellectual property matters such as trademarks, copyrights and unfair competition. He has prosecuted thousands of federal copyright applications, and hundreds of federal trademark applications. He has both lectured and authored articles relating to intellectual property. Additionally, he represents clients in a wide range of business and corporate law matters. Prior to joining the firm, Mr. Brownfield gained valuable expertise in the field as a clerk for Chief Justice Robert E. Cooper of the Tennessee Supreme Court.
In the pursuit of his professional journey, Mr. Brownfield earned a Bachelor of Science in criminal justice from the University of Missouri in 1980 before receiving a Doctor of Jurisprudence from the University of Tennessee's College of Law four years later. He was subsequently admitted to practice through the Tennessee and Georgia Bar Associations, the U.S. District Court for the Eastern and Middle Districts of Tennessee, and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit. He was previously a member of the Tennessee Board of Law Examiners' District 3 Investigating Committee. Endeavoring to remain aware of developments in the field, Mr. Brownfield maintains his professional alignments with the Chattanooga, Tennessee, Georgia and American Bar Associations, and the International Trademark Association.
In the course of his civic endeavors, Mr. Brownfield has served as Legal Counsel for the Chattanooga Elks, and Legal Counsel and a Director of the Tennessee Elks Association. In previous years, he served as a director of the Visually Impaired Training and Learning Center. In recognition of his outstanding work, he has been honored many times. After receiving the Harold Warner Scholarship while studying for his legal degree, he graduated with honors. Following those achievements, Mr. Brownfield earned the Project of the Year Award from the Chattanooga Jaycees in 1991 for its Leadership Academy, and was Officer of the Year for the Chattanooga Elks in 2017-18.
