Mr. Mailer-Howat is renowned as an innovative developer of environmentally sustainable bio-degradable green plastic utilizing carbon neutral CHP renewable energy that draws on his 35 years of working in Brazil's agricultural and banking sectors. Currently, he is Executive Chairman of the VitaBio Group based in Rio de Janeiro, which is developing a vertically integrated supply chain of Polylactide (PLA), a bio-polymer plastic resin made from locally grown sugarcane, in grades and at prices that compete with most fossil fuel-based plastics.
Growing up in the UK at a time before lead gas was banned and with a father, a career army officer who went on to become a Director in the World Wildlife Fund, Mr. Patrick Mailer-Howat learned early on that industry and consumers will only change their behavior if mandated by law, or financially incented to do so.
Mr. Mailer-Howat is a graduate from the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst and served as an officer in the British Army from 1973 to 1977. He attended the School of Oriental & African Studies, University of London studying Economics of Agricultural Development and Finance at Baruch College, CUNY and earned the chartered financial analyst designation in 1992.
Mr. Mailer-Howat began his career as a commodities trader at J.H. Rayners Limited in London in 1977. He went on to co-found Mailer Walker International Limited, a London based commodity trading company in 1981 before becoming Head of Commodities for the HSBC Group's global trading company, Equator Trade Services Limited in 1985.
He joined the First National Bank of Boston in 1989 as Vice President international banking Brazil and became the Director in 1993 to 1995. Mr. Mailer-Howat went on to become Director of international equities and analytics sales for Instinet Corporation (Reuters Group) from 1996 to 1999; before becoming Managing Director, International Planning Group for Citibank, Brazil until 2006.
Mr. Mailer-Howat co-founded Vita Bioenergia Limitada in 2007 based in Rio de Janeiro and Usina Tres Barras Limitada in 2009 based in Amambai, Mato Grosso do Sul State to establish the VitaBio Group. The initial focus of the business was to produce bioethanol and carbon neutral cogenerated energy for Brazil's domestic market. On becoming Executive Chairman in 2016, he restructured the business to concentrate on finding a solution to producing low cost 100% green polymers. The VitaBio Group can now create a vertically integrated production platform of biodegradable polymers utilizing proven technologies. The process is carbon neutral and potentially carbon capturing with no waste, or toxic products. The platform has been designed to be scaled up to meet the demand for an environmentally sustainable non-toxic plastic required by global brands and consumers as well as current and future legislation.
