Dr. Padlan is a retired immunologist, educator, and consultant with more than 40 years of excellence in his discipline. He attended the University of the Philippines, intending to follow in his parents' footsteps and become a doctor, but was dissuaded by a professor who stressed that there were too many physicians in the Philippines already. He completed a Bachelor of Science in physics in 1960, and decided to pursue further education in biophysics. Dr. Padlan attended the Johns Hopkins University, earning a Doctor of Philosophy in biophysics in 1968.
Dr. Padlan started his professional journey into science as a junior faculty member in the University of the Philippines from 1960 to 1964. He left for the US to begin his doctoral studies at Johns Hopkins in 1964. After earning his doctorate in 1968, Dr. Padlan returned to the University of the Philippines and served as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Physics. He returned to Johns Hopkins in 1969 to pursue his postdoctoral training. In 1971, he moved to the US National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland. In 1978, he returned to Johns Hopkins as a Research Scientist. After five years at Hopkins, he returned to the National Institutes of Health as a Visiting Scientist, then as a Research Physicist, and finally retiring in 2000 (for health reasons). Even after retirement, Dr. Padlan continued to teach at various universities and serve as consultant to pharmaceutical companies and law firms on matters concerning therapeutic antibodies.
Dr. Padlan has more than 150 scientific publications and more than 30 patents granted in the US and abroad. He has written a monograph: "Antibody-Antigen Complexes" (R.G.Landes Co., Austin) 1994. [ISBN 1-57069-181-4], and has served as Editor or Co-Editor of 3 scientific volumes. From1998 to 2012, Dr. Padlan returned to the Philippines to teach and collaborate with Philippine scientists. He served as Co-Editor of Philippine Science Letters from 2000 to 2014 and wrote more than 50 articles popularizing science in Philippine newspapers.
For his scientific achievements and contributions to Philippine Science, Dr. Padlan was elected a Corresponding Member of the National Academy of Science and Technology, Philippines in 2005.
