Backed by many years of practiced experience in law, Ms. Ostroy excels as the principal of the Law Offices of Joan Patsy Ostroy, which she established in 1980. From 1984 to 1991, she gained valuable expertise as a partner in Ostroy & Truby as well as in private practice. During the earliest years of her career, Ms. Ostroy worked as an associate with Bersch & Kaplowitz and later as of counsel for the Law Offices of James R. Eliaser. In the past seventeen years, she eschewed litigation in favor of consensual dispute resolution and preparation of documents such as prenuptial agreements.
Even though her career has been filled with highlights, Ms. Ostroy is especially proud of her involvement in the civil rights movement of the 1960s. She was privileged enough to hear Martin Luther King Jr.'s "I Have a Dream" speech and has remained dedicated to all manner of civil rights and feminist issues ever since. Recently, Ms. Ostroy was involved in a forum to discuss anti-Semitism and racism with a group known as the Black Jewish Justice Alliance, which featured Reverend James Lawson, a colleague of Martin Luther King Jr., and Rabbi Sharon Brous of Ikar, as the keynote speakers.
In pursuit of a career in law, Ms. Ostroy earned a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Pennsylvania in 1964 and a Doctor of Jurisprudence from Loyola University School of Law in 1976. Over the years, she also completed coursework at Paris-Sorbonne University and the London School of Economics and Political Science. Likewise, she has received certifications through the State Bar of California Board of Legal Specialization, the London School of Economics and Political Science and the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers. Upon graduating from law school, Ms. Ostroy was admitted to practice law through the State Bar of California, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit and the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California.
Ms. Ostroy retains her professional alignment with several organizations in order to remain aware of changes in the field. Throughout her career, she has been affiliated with a plethora of committees at the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers, the Women Lawyers' Association of Los Angeles, and the Los Angeles County Bar Association. During her spare time, Ms. Ostroy has also contributed to her community via the Attorneys Against Discrimination, the Family Law Departments of the Los Angeles Central and West Los Angeles Superior Courts, the L.A.S.C. Domestic Violence Task Force and was a co-founder of the Harriett Buhai Center for Family Law and the Los Angeles Collaborative Family Law Association.
Due to her considerable knowledge, Ms. Ostroy's law review article "HFH v. Superior Court: Another Perspective on the Dilemma of the Downzoned Property Owner," was published in the Loyola Law Review. In light of her professional accomplishments, she accepted a Commendation for Integrity and Commitment to Justice from the Los Angeles City Council, the Alumnae of the Year Award from the State Bar of California, a Distinguished Service Award from the Women Lawyers Association of Los Angeles, and consistent AV ratings through Martindale-Hubbell, including AV Preeminent. Industry publications and organizations such as Southern California Super Lawyers, the Los Angeles Daily Journal, Los Angeles Magazine, Best Lawyers in America and Who's Who in American Law have also honored her for outstanding work. She was also was selected as a Member of the Nation's Top One Percent by the National Association of Distinguished Counsel.
