Prior to this appointment, he worked at Harvard Law School as the Bruce Bromley professor of law from 1986 to 2007, a professor between 1972 and 1986 and a visiting professor from 1971 until 1972. Previously, Mr. Miller held the positions of a professor and an associate professor at the University of Michigan Law School between 1962 and 1972.
From 1961 to 1962, Mr. Miller served at Columbia Law School as a lecturer and the associate director for Project International Procedure. He began his career as an associate of Cleary, Gottlieb, Steen and Hamilton in New York from 1958 until 1961. During this time, Mr. Miller completed service in the U.S. Army between 1958 and 1959.
Before embarking on his professional path, Mr. Miller pursued a formal education, conducting coursework at Brooklyn College from 1952 to 1955 and the City College of New York in 1955. He continued his academic efforts at the University of Rochester, earning a Bachelor of Arts in history in 1955. He concluded his studies at Harvard University in 1958, graduating with a Bachelor of Laws. Following these accomplishments, Mr. Miller was admitted to practice law by the New York State Bar Association, the Massachusetts Bar Association and the Supreme Court of the United States, for which he later held posts on the advisory committee on civil rules from 1978 until 1991.
Beyond his responsibilities within the field, Mr. Miller has participated in numerous endeavors outside of his professional circles. A member of the board of overseers for the RAND Institute for Civil Justice at New York University from 1998 to 2002, he has contributed to myriad boards, commissions, committees and groups for the National Academy of Science, the Research Foundation on Complex Litigations, the American Association of Law Schools, the International Judicial Assistance and the American Law Institute, to name a few esteemed institutes. Featured on "Good Morning America," "Miller's Law," "Miller's Court" and the acclaimed documentary film "RBG," Mr. Miller has found success with his written works as well, authoring "Civil Practice Laws and Rules Manual" in 1967, "The Assault on Privacy: Computers, Data Banks, and Dossiers" in 1971, and the 'Civil Procedure Cases and Materials' series, which includes "Federal Practice and Procedure" and "New York Civil Practice."
In light of his exceptional undertakings, Mr. Miller has accrued several accolades throughout his impressive career. Proud of his appointment as a reporter for the federal rules advisory committee by the Chief Justice of the United States in 1978 and 1982, he also fondly recalls his selection by the President of the United States for the National Copyright Commission. Recognized as a Commander of the British Empire, he was presented with a National Emmy Award for "The Constitution, That Delicate Balance." Mr. Miller was further celebrated in multiple editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in American Law and Who's Who in the East.
