Dr. Lamia Al Naama worked for nearly 20 years as a professor in the department and with the University of Basrah's College of Medicine.

As the child of a family of medical professionals, Dr. Al Naama has always aspired to pursue a similar path. From 1971 to 1979, she found success as a research assistant in the department of biochemistry for Basrah Medical College, after which she advanced to become a lecturer and a researcher. In 1982, she held a position as the head of the aforementioned department, and maintained activity in this role until 2015. Additionally, Dr. Al Naama worked for nearly 20 years as a professor in the department and with the University of Basrah's College of Medicine.
Prior to joining Basrah Medical College, Dr. Al Naama earned a Bachelor of Science in pharmacy from the College of Pharmacy at the University of Baghdad. From there, she pursued a Doctor of Philosophy in medical biochemistry at the University of Manchester in the United Kingdom, which she completed after five years in 1979. With a plethora of knowledge at her disposal, she has worked and published extensively on local and major health problems in Basra, Iraq; like hereditary disorders that affect the human red blood cells (RBC) i.e. Hemoglobinopathies (Sickle cell disease and Thalassemia) and enzymopathies (Deficiencies of Glucose 6 phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD), Pyruvate kinase (PK), Hexose kinase (HK)); Diabetes and cancer through her contribution to various articles together with other scholars in these fields. These can be referred to in many respected journals i.e. Annals of Tropical Pediatrics; Cancer Epidemiology; Eastern Mediterranean Health Journal; Biological Trace Element Research; Screening and Journal of Pakistan Medical Association.
In the coming years, Dr. Al Naama intends to continue publishing papers in the field. Further, she wishes to expand her knowledge of medical biochemistry through additional reading. Dr. Al Naama also aims to continue helping others in any way that she can for as long as she can.
