Originally active as a research fellow at Columbia University from 1974 to 1979, he subsequently worked as the director of research and development for Enzo Biochem Inc., a biotechnology company in New York City. Additionally, Dr. Rao flourished as a senior scientist at Bethesda Research Laboratories in Gaithersburg, MD, between 1979 and 1987.
A visiting scientist at Georgetown University, Dr. Rao provided his time and resources as a scientist at the National Cancer Institute with the National Institutes of Health. While completing graduate and postgraduate coursework in college, Dr. Rao began contributing articles to various scientific publications, especially on sulfur nucleotides in RNA. During these years, he was notably the first person to demonstrate a presence of selenium in nucleic acids. Dr. Rao has since acquired a patent for novel biotinylated nucleotides.
During the 1980s, Dr. Rao served as the vice president of the Asian Indian Council and the president of the American Indian Film Corporation in Washington. Born in Madras Province, India, he pursued an education at the Indian Institute of Science in Bangalore, from which he acquired degrees in 1969 and 1976. An elected fellow of the American Institute of Chemists, he is also a member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Honored with a David Coffin Award from Dexter Corporation in Windsor, CT, in 1987, Dr. Rao is also a celebrated Marquis listee who has been included in the first edition of Who's Who in Science and Engineering.
