Dr. Brenniman is renowned as an environmental scientist and educator with a career spanning more than 25 years. He initially pursued an education at Central Michigan University, earning a Bachelor of Science in 1965 and a Master of Science in 1966 with the intention of becoming a high school biology or mathematics teacher. From 1966 to 1968, he served in the United States Army Medical Service Corps achieving the rank of Captain and from 1968 to 1974 he served in the Army Active Reserves. During this time, Dr. Brenniman realized that he no longer wanted to teach high school, concluding his academic efforts at the University of Michigan, from which he graduated with a Master of Public Health in 1969 and a Doctor of Philosophy in 1974.
From 1974 to 1978, Dr. Brenniman began his career as an assistant professor at the University of Illinois, for which he further flourished as an associate professor from 1978 to 1994. From 1994 until his retirement in 2002, he found success as a professor of environmental and health sciences at the aforementioned university. In addition to his academic career, Dr. Brenniman excelled as the director of Chicago's Office of Solid Waste Management from 1992 to 2000.
Moreover, Dr. Brenniman is the author of several books on waste management and recycling, including "Mixed Plastics Recycling Technology" in 1992 and "Waste-to-Energy Combustion Facilities and Materials Recycling" in 1996. In 2006, he was inducted into the Central Michigan University ROTC Hall of Fame. Likewise, Dr. Brenniman is a member of the Water Environmental Federation and the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
