Dr. Girovich is renowned as a mechanical engineer with more than 55 years of distinction in his field. Raised in Ukraine by a college educated nonreligious Jewish Soviet family, he was initially denied college admissions due to the anti-Semitic Stalinist policy. He eventually pursued an education at Kharkiv Polytechnic Institute, earning a Master of Science in mechanical engineering in 1957. He subsequently graduated with a Bachelor of Science in theoretical physics from V.N. Karazin Kharkiv National University in 1965. Dr. Girovich obtained a Doctor of Philosophy in mechanical engineering from Moscow Polytechnic University in 1974.
From 1957 to 1959, Dr. Girovich began her career as a mechanical engineer at the state-owned diesel manufacturing plant in Kharkov, for which he later worked as the head of the plant's design bureau from 1959 to 1961 and the manager of automation of manufacturing processes from 1961 to 1977. Emigrating to the United States in 1978 under a Carter-era program that allowed 250,000 Soviet Jews to enter the United States, he accepted the post of a research and development engineer for Koppers Corporation of Baltimore, MD. Dr. Girovich further flourished at Enelco, a division of Koppers Corporation, as the chief mechanical engineer in 1980 and an engineering manager from 1981 to 1986.
Dr. Girovich worked as manager of special incineration systems for Enelco Waste Disposal Group from 1986 to 1989, at which point he served at Bio-Gro Systems in Annapolis, MD. He found success as a thermal processing project development manager working with several European companies during 1995-2000. He notably excelled as the director of engineering and technology for Synagro in Baltimore, MD, from 2000 until his retirement in 2012. The editor and author of "Biosolids Treatment and Management," in 1995, he is a frequent contributor to professional journals. A former lecturer in environmental engineering at the Johns Hopkins University, Dr. Girovich holds six patents for thermal drying and chemical stabilization technologies, which he helped bring to market in the United States.
