Upon returning to the United States, he enrolled in Duke University, graduating magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts in chemistry in 1969. From 1978 until 2008, Dr. Ostdahl found success as an attending neurosurgeon at the Holy Spirit Hospital, Harrisburg Hospital, Polyclinic Hospital, and Neurological Surgery, Ltd. of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. He further practiced neurosurgery on behalf of Pinnacle Health Systems of Harrisburg between 2008 and 2011. Dr. Ostdahl is board-certified by the American Board of Neurological Surgery and the National Board of Medical Examiners.
While a resident, Dr. Ostdahl contributed to the original literature documenting the DREZ Procedure, a widely-used technique in neurosurgery. He is a frequent contributor to professional journals, and the author of a chapter in "Neurosurgery," published in 1985. To remain well-versed in developments which occur in his field, Dr. Ostdahl is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons, as well as a member of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons.
