Having practiced medicine for over 55 years before his retirement, Dr. Mitty distinguished himself as a diagnostic radiologist and professor of radiology on behalf of Mount Sinai Hospital and Mount Sinai School of Medicine. During his career, he played an instrumental role in the many advances in his field. He was notably one of the first to use interventional radiology, which is a minimally invasive, image-guided diagnosis and treatment of disease. After mastering the technique, he offered a training program for the benefit of other radiologists. Dr. Mitty notably oversaw five interventional rooms and a recovery room on site once this cutting-edge technology became available.
Receiving a Bachelor of Science in biology at Queens College in 1954, Dr. Mitty subsequently earned a Doctor of Medicine at State University of New York in 1958. Following these achievements, he served in the U.S. Navy between 1959 and 1961. Additional educational pursuits to his credit included an internship at Mount Sinai Hospital, residency in internal medicine at Maimonides Hospital in Brooklyn, New York, and a second residency in radiology at Mount Sinai Hospital. Dr. Mitty is a board-certified radiologist since 1966 and holds a certificate of additional qualification in diagnostic and interventional radiology since 1995.
An elected fellow of the American College of Radiology and fellow and founding member of the Society of Interventional Radiology. Dr. Mitty is a member of the American Roentgen Ray Society and the Radiologic Society of North America. Recognized for his achievements, Dr. Mitty received a Gold Medal from the Society of Interventional Radiology and a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Uroradiology Society. He was also honored with a Teaching Award from the State University College of Medicine and a Jacobi Award from Mount Sinai Hospital. A celebrated Marquis listee, he has been featured in the 27th edition of Who's Who in the East.
