Supported by professional excellence and an exceptional educational background, Dr. Anderson flourished as a chemical engineer for over 40 years. He began his prestigious career with Exxon Research and Engineering in Baytown, Texas, as a research engineer of coal liquefaction and other synfuels in 1977. Over the next six years he progressed to senior staff engineer of synfuels at the Baytown R&D Labs until 1983. Dr. Anderson then relocated to New Jersey where he accepted a position of section head of process planning engineering with the company. He later progressed to serve as a corporate technical advisor from 1985 to 1988 before relocating to Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and holding the posts of section head of fuels processing R&D and quality coordinator.
As he advanced with the company, Dr. Anderson held the posts of catalyst coordinator and a distinguished engineering associate of hydro-processing and catalyst development for Exxon Mobil in Baton Rouge between 1992 and 2007. Upon retiring from Exxon Mobil, he contributed as a global hydro-processing specialist for Albemarle Corporation from 2007 to 2017. The highlight of his successful career was bringing coal liquefaction technology to commercial readiness and developing a molecular process model to help guide research in that area. Dr. Anderson was also gratified to have worked on the research, development and successful commercialization of more than 40 catalysts enabling clean fuel technology, which improved refiners' abilities to process feeds more efficiently.
Other achievements to Dr. Anderson's credit include his discovery of the effects of shear stress on human blood platelet functions in clotting, the development of a kinetic model for coal liquefaction, and a bottoms recycle process scheme for Exxon's coal liquefaction process. Civically, Dr. Anderson has served in the United States Air Force, where he worked as a biomedical engineer. Outside of work, he enjoys golfing, reading and volunteering as high school STEM course tutor and as a Sunday school teacher.
An alumnus of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Dr. Anderson earned a Bachelor of Science and Master of Engineering in biomedical engineering in 1968 and 1969, respectively. Thereafter, he secured a Doctor of Philosophy in chemical engineering from Rice University in 1977. To remain aware of changes in the field, he has maintained professional ties with the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Institute of Chemical Engineers and Sigma Xi.
