Dr. DeVoe is renowned as a professor emeritus of psychology at St. Cloud State University. She began her career by pursuing a nursing diploma, but decided to halt her education after getting married and becoming pregnant, as the school's regulations did not permit pregnant students to remain in the nursing program. Dr. DeVoe eventually earned her licensed practical nurse certification in 1967, and worked as a surgical nurse at various clinics in Western Michigan for several years before returning to academia.
Dr. DeVoe subsequently enrolled in Grand Valley State University, where, at the encouragement of her advisor, she changed her major to psychology, a newly-discovered passion. She later graduated with a Bachelor of Science in psychology and health sciences, cum laude, from Grand Valley State University in 1982. Dr. DeVoe concluded her studies at Wayne State University, obtaining a Master of Arts in psychology in 1988 and a Doctor of Philosophy in psychology in 1990.
From 1983 to 1984, Dr. DeVoe began her career as a graduate research assistant at the Lafayette Clinic in Detroit. She excelled as a graduate research assistant at Wayne State University from 1985 to 1989, at which point she served the Philadelphia Geriatric Center as a research scientist until 1992. Dr. DeVoe further flourished at Saint Cloud State University as an assistant professor from 1992 to 1997, an associate professor from 1997 to 2001, a professor from 2001 to 2017 and a professor emeritus since 2017.
Notably, Dr. DeVoe has presented numerous papers and panels on the psychology of aging and emotional development, and she is a frequent contributor to professional journals. She has been active as a visiting faculty member for institutions including Drexel University and Mercy College. A former reviewer for the Journal of Psychology and Aging, she is a member of the Gerontological Society of America, the Association for Psychological Science, and the American Psychological Association. Accepting grants from the Alzheimer's Association, Dr. DeVoe has been recognized as a Thomas C. Rumble University graduate fellow and also as a NIMH research fellow.
