NEWARK, NJ, January 29, 2020 /24-7PressRelease/ -- James E. Tyrrell, Jr. has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Lawyer James E. Tyrrell, Jr. has served as lead counsel in the country's highest profile litigations spanning more than four decades. From Agent Orange in the 1980's, to Y2K in the 1990's, to the World Trade Center Litigation in the 2000's, Mr. Tyrrell has been the "go to counsel" for American's largest corporations facing "bet the company" litigation.

Mr. Tyrrell seemed destined to be a lawyer from his earliest years. An accomplished public speaker and debater since high school, Mr. Tyrrell attended the School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University. He graduated summa cum laude, ranked first in his class, and won the Garvin Oratorical Medal as Georgetown's most outstanding public speaker. Awarded a Woodrow Wilson Fellowship, a Root-Tilden Full Tuition Scholarship to NYU Law School, a Full Fellowship to the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard, and acceptance at all of the law schools to which he applied (including Harvard, Yale, and Columbia), Mr. Tyrrell opted for Harvard Law School. There, he earned a spot in the final round of Harvard's prestigious Ames Moot Court Competition and was chosen as Best Oralist. Mr. Tyrrell served as a Lieutenant in the Navy Judge Advocate General's Corps and was a law clerk for the Honorable Leonard I. Garth of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit.

After starting his career as an antitrust and securities lawyer, Mr. Tyrrell undertook the defense of Monsanto in the landmark Agent Orange Litigation. He became one of Monsanto's chief trial counsel and led the company's defense of the PCB, vinyl chloride, dioxin, and other toxic tort cases for decades.

Mr. Tyrrell's national reputation for class action, product liability, and mass tort litigation led to his recruitment by Latham & Watkins to join Michael Chertoff (later Secretary of Homeland Security) in starting a New Jersey office for the firm. Mr. Tyrrell became the Managing Partner of that office and Co-Chair of Latham's Global Product Liability and Mass Tort Practice Group.

Mr. Tyrrell's notable representations have included: Deepwater Horizon -Seacor; Y2K -AT&T, Lucent & Avaya; Genocide -Engility; DES -Glaxo; Breast Implants -General Electric; Alcohol -Brown Forman; Puerto Rico Environmental Litigation -Exxon; Dialysis -DaVita; Campbell Soup Product Recall -SunOpta; Unintended Acceleration -Toyota Quality Advisory Panel; Telephone Calling Card Class Actions -IDT; Corrugated Containers -Crown Zellerbach; Silver Futures -Chicago Board of Trade; Banking -Bank of China; Environmental -Madison Square Garden; and, Black Lung -Johns Hopkins.

When Patton Boggs, the leading political firm in Washington, D.C., sought to open offices in New York and New Jersey, its legendary leader Tom Boggs approached Mr. Tyrrell to take on that role. Fifty colleagues joined Mr. Tyrrell in starting offices for Patton Boggs in New York and New Jersey. Mr. Tyrrell became a member of Patton Boggs' Executive Committee, the Regional Managing Partner of the New York and New Jersey offices, and Global Chair of the firm's Product Liability and Mass Tort practice.

Mr. Tyrrell may be best known for his ten year role in the World Trade Center Litigation. After competing against the top thirty mass tort law firms in the country, Mr. Tyrrell was chosen to lead the defense of the City of New York, and all 150 of its contractors, in 13,000 lawsuits alleging personal injury and property damage arising from the cleanup operations following the 9/11 attacks. Appointed by the Court as liaison counsel, Mr. Tyrrell became the principal spokesperson for more than 500 defendants in the highest profile mass tort litigation of the century.

Having served as the chair or co-chair of the Product Liability and Mass Tort Practice Groups of four major law firms over his distinguished career, Mr. Tyrrell currently holds that position with Sills Cummis & Gross P.C., named by Benchmark Litigation for each of the past three years as the top litigation firm in Mr. Tyrrell's home state of New Jersey.

Mr. Tyrrell's numerous professional recognitions include: Best Lawyers in America (2007-2020); Chambers USA, New Jersey Litigation; Product Liability (2006-2019); Lawdragon 500 -Leading Lawyers in America; Super Lawyers, New Jersey, Class Action (2005-2019); Super Lawyers, "Master of Disaster," (2007); New Jersey Law Journal's 2013 and 2015 Litigation Department of the Year -Products Liability & Mass Tort; American Lawyer, Lawyer of the Week (Sept. 2011). Under Mr. Tyrrell's guidance as Regional Managing Partner, Patton Boggs was named by NJ Biz, based upon the vote of its employees, as one of the five best places to work in New Jersey (of all businesses -not just law firms); and, in 2013, it won first place among all large employers in the State.
