Dee M. McManus is a sought-after speaker in her fields

Ms. McManus has accrued more than 50 years of inimitable expertise in her field as a researcher and nonprofit administrator. She developed an interest in oncology during her early childhood, spurred by her science fair entry regarding cancer treatments. In preparing for a career in medicine, she attended a medical technology program at Northwestern Institute and became a Register Medical Technology (RMT) and then in 1977 graduated with Bachelor of Science in microbiology and immunology from the University of Minnesota. Ms. McManus concluded her academic efforts in 2008, earning a master's degree in nonprofit finance.
From 1968 until 1978, Ms. McManus initially found success as a laboratory manager in the department of surgical research at the University of Minnesota Medical School. She subsequently excelled as a research associate at Health Central Institutes of Golden Valley between 1978 and 1980, and Genesis Biotech Laboratories in Edina from 1982 to 1985. She later distinguished herself as an independent consultant based out of Lakeville from 1985 until 1988, whereupon she rejoined the University of Minnesota as the director of laboratory product services. Ms. McManus introduced over 5000 new stocked products into the University Stores; this provided 10% annual savings for common lab commodities used by 2000 campus research labs and added $10 million University savings over 5years. Scientific equipment purchased through University-wide contracts saved $40 million in annual lab purchases.
In 2001, Ms. McManus built a prolific career as the administrative director of the Lillehei Heart Institute (LHI) at the University of Minnesota, during which she oversaw the development of a physical museum, a video conference center, and meeting center as well as the administration of a $1 million annual trust. In August 2002, LHI, due to its remodeling quality, became the site for the meeting of President George W. Bush and the University President, Ms. McManus worked with the Secret Service and White House Staff to prepare for the meeting, as well as with University, Minneapolis, St. Paul, and Coast Guard personnel regarding security.
In addition, Ms. McManus organized the 50th Anniversary of Open Heart Surgery held June 2005, where notable international cardiology faculty spoke at the Open Heart Conference and received gifts of DVD seminar packages and copies of the Annual of Thoracic Surgery, where their talks were posted. 400 attended the evening black tie affair.
From 2008 to 2015, she maintained activities as the first executive director of the international nonprofit Graduate Women in Science (GWIS), bringing a 1922 incorporated organization, into the 21st century. Fundraising increased annual fellowships of $50,000 to $60,000 made available online from $1.4 million endowment. Membership increased 55% in four years, and legacy software was installed in 2014 to replace individual software packages (newsletter, website, communication and film pro). Ms. McManus received the GWIS National Meritorious Service Award on June 2016 for her 27 years of member service and seven years as Executive Director, given only to a few members throughout the 98 years of GWIS operations.
Since 2015, Ms. McManus has been a citizen science participant in the communication and annual meeting committees and continues to be involve locally and internationally.
She is a sought-after speaker in her fields, and has contributed to "Handbook of Cardiac Anatomy, Physiology, and Devices," "Prudent Lab Practices," and supplements to the scientific journals- Annals of Thoracic Surgery and Bioconsumer Review. Ms. McManus is a member of the American Chemical Society, the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) and Graduate Women in Science (GWIS).
