Providing more than 35 years of expertise, her practice is concentrated in commercial real estate development and investment, with a focus on large-scale multi-use and hotel projects. She also boasts extensive experience in complex land assembly, construction, mezzanine and permanent financing, commercial leases and ground leases. Prior to establishing Malkerson Gunn Martin LLP in 1996 with several colleagues, Ms. Martin was a partner with and Chair of the Business Department of Popham Haik Schnobrich Kaufman & Doty Ltd.
Currently, Ms. Martin notably represents NP International USA LLC in two mixed-use projects based in Coral Gables, Florida, both of which are set to open in 2020. Paseo de la Riviera consists of two towers with approximately 204 residential units, related retail and office space and a complementing landmark hotel with approximately 246 rooms. Gables Station spans three towers with residences, retail and commercial space in a location connecting Coral Gables to downtown Miami through the transit corridors of US1 and the Metrorail.
Lecturing on various topics relative to her area of law since 1985, Ms. Martin has also been widely published. She most recently authored 'Special Issues When Purchasing Property for Development' in the Minnesota Real Estate Purchase and Sale Deskbook in 2015. Deeply involved in her local community, she first accepted a position on the planning commission of Medina, Minnesota, in 2010 and later with the city council in 2013. She served on the council for five years and was elected as the mayor of Medina in 2018. Ms. Martin is also a former member of the board of trustees of The Black School and a former chairperson of the 2040 Comprehensive Plan Steering Committee in Medina.
Ms. Martin graduated as valedictorian of Stillwater High School in 1975. She graduated from the University of Minnesota with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1978, and obtained her Doctor of Jurisprudence degree, with honors, in 1981 from the University of Minnesota Law School, where she served as Managing Editor of the Minnesota Law Review. Ms. Martin has been admitted to practice law by the Minnesota Bar Association, the U.S. District Court for the State of Minnesota, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit and the Supreme Court of the United States. Aligned with several industry related organizations throughout her career, Ms. Martin is a past chairperson of the American Bar Association's Section of Real Property, Trust and Estate Law.
Other memberships to her credit include the American College of Real Estate Lawyers, as well as the Minneapolis Women's Rotary Club for which she served as the vice president and president. Selected by her peers for The Best Lawyers in America for real estate law for the 2020 edition (and prior editions) of Best Lawyers, Ms. Martin was also recently selected for inclusion in Minnesota Super Lawyers for 2019 (and numerous prior years). Additionally, both Ms. Martin and her firm are AV rated by Martindale-Hubbell.
