Justice Lewis is renowned as a judge and mediator with a career spanning more than 50 years. He initially pursued an education at Tufts College, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts, magna cum laude, in 1954. Justice Lewis subsequently earned a Doctor of Jurisprudence in 1957 at Harvard University and was admitted to practice law by the District of Columbia Bar that same year.
From 1957 to 1961, Justice Lewis served his country to the rank of lieutenant commander in the United States Navy. He began his legal career as an attorney for General Atomic in La Jolla, CA, from 1961 to 1963, at which point he became a partner at Haskins, Lewis, Nugent & Newnham in San Diego. He later held appointments as a judge with the Ramona Justice Court in 1975, and the Municipal Court of El Cajon, CA, in 1977. Justice Lewis further flourished as a judge presiding over the Superior Court of San Diego from 1979 to 1984 and an associate justice of the California Court of Appeals in San Diego from 1984 to 1987.
Working of counsel at Lathan & Watkins from 1987 to 1997, Justice Lewis excelled in private practice as an arbitrator and a mediator from 1997 until his retirement in 2012. A former member of the adjunct faculty at Western State University School Law, he is proud to be the only person in California history to have served on all California Courts, including an appointment to the California Supreme Court for a case in 1984. Additionally active as a consulting editor on the 1984 California Civil Jury Instructions, he was recognized as the 1984 Trial Judge of the Year by the San Diego Trial Lawyers Association. Moreover, Justice Lewis is a member of the American Judicature Society and a former trustee of the San Diego Museum of Art.
Justice Lewis is a retired director of Fisher Scientific, Wheelabrator Technologies, Henley Properties, General Chemical Corp., Invesco and Aim Mutual Funds, Cardium Therapeutics, and Tennenbaum Opportunities Fund. He is Knight Commander in The Order of St. Hubert.
