Mr. Mitchell is renowned for publishing a weekly newspaper, The Point Reyes Light, which won the 1979 Pulitzer Prize for public service. The prize was for exposing violence and financial misdeeds by the onetime Synanon cult. Mr. Mitchell's career spanned 35 years. He earned a Bachelor's degree in English literature at Stanford University in 1967, and started graduate coursework at San Francisco State University before dropping out to travel. This was at the height of the Vietnam War, and Mr. Mitchell was expected to be drafted into the United States Army, but the draft board in error sent him a student deferment. This allowed him to return to Stanford University where he earned a Master of Arts in Communications in 1967.
From 1968 to 1970, Mr. Mitchell was an instructor at Upper Iowa College and from 1970 to 1971 worked as a reporter for the daily newspaper Council Bluffs, The Nonpareil. He then reported for The Daily Union Democrat in Sonora until becoming editor of the weekly Sebastopol Times in 1973. In 1975, he and his ex-wife Cathy Mitchell bought their own weekly newspaper, The Point Reyes Light. Mr. Mitchell served as editor and (with his ex-wife) publisher until 1981, when he was hired as a reporter by The San Francisco Examiner. His assignments at The Examiner included repeated trips to Central America to cover civil unrest including, fighting in El Salvador and Guatemala. In 1984, Mr. Mitchell reacquired The Point Reyes Light and published it until his retirement in November 2005.
Mr. Mitchell's first book, which he co-wrote with his ex-wife and sociologist Richard Ofshe, The Light on Synanon: How a Country Weekly Exposed a Corporate Cult- and Won the Pulitzer Prize, was made into a movie, Attack on Fear, by CBS. In 2013, he co-edited a regionally popular book, The Light on the Coast: 65 Years of News Big and Small as Reported in The Point Reyes Light. The International Society of Weekly Newspaper Editors subsequently honored Mr. Mitchell with the 2014 Cervi Award for lifetime accomplishments as an editor. In addition, he is a former director of the California Newspaper Publishers Association.
