Dr. Shapiro is a postsecondary administrator and nephrologist with more than 35 years of experience in his specialty. Having developed a fascination with science while coming of age, he pursued a career in medicine at the urging of his family. He subsequently attended the University of Pennsylvania, graduating in 1976 with a Bachelor of Arts, and earned a Doctor of Medicine at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey in 1980. Eminently qualified within his field, Dr. Shapiro is a diplomate of the American Board of Internal Medicine and the American Board of Nephrology.
Between 1980 and 1983, Dr. Shapiro completed a residency in internal medicine at Georgetown University Hospital. Following this appointment, he joined the University of Denver in 1983 as a fellow in nephrology, rising to the role of professor of medicine by 1997. Dr. Shapiro soon departed for the University of Toledo College of Medicine and Life Sciences, where he served as the chief of the department of nephrology until 1998 and the chair of the department of medicine from 1999 to 2012.
From 2006 until 2012, Dr. Shapiro found success as an associate dean of business development at the University of Toledo. Since 2012, he has distinguished himself as the dean of the Marshall University Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine. He is a frequent contributor to professional journals, and believes that he has entered a professional renaissance with regards to the efficacy and novelty of his research. Dr. Shapiro is a fellow of the American Heart Association, in which he has held a variety of leadership roles, and a Master of the American College of Physicians.
