Dr. Ann B. Barnet was recently named to the Washington Women's Hall of Fame in 2015.

Dr. Barnet is a pediatric neurologist and professor emeritus of pediatrics and neurology at George Washington University's school of medicine. Renowned for her work, she also notably served as the director of the Evoked Response Laboratory at Washington Children's National Medical Center between 1965 and 1994. During the early stages of her career, Dr. Barnet held appointments as a research associate at the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research in Washington and as a clinical director at the Cambridge Child Development Clinic in Massachusetts. A consultant of neurological devices for the Food and Drug Administration between 1978 and 1983, she also provided her expertise as a member of the communicative science study section of the National Institutes of Health from 1973 to 1977. Furthermore, Dr. Barnet was instrumental as a member of the vaccine injury board for the Department of Health and Human Services and the D.C. Mayor's Commission on Women and Girls as well.
Dr. Barnet is the co-author of the 1998 book "The Youngest Minds: Parenting and Genetic Inheritance in the Development of Intellect and Emotion" with her husband, Richard Barnet, a talented author who has written extensively on politics. Revealing facts which every parent must know regarding what occurs in a child's brain during the critical first months and years of life, the two explore children's genetic tendencies toward anger, fear and other emotions. Dr. Barnet is also the author of the 2009 book "Border Crossings: A Spiritual Journey in Medicine," a memoir that recounts her childhood and how she was affected by the Great Depression, World War II and anti-Semitism. Furthermore, she has contributed articles to various scholarly journals in her area of expertise.
Aligned with the Institute for Policy Studies in Washington, a progressive organization dedicated to building a more equitable, ecologically sustainable and peaceful society, the organization was co-founded by Dr. Barnet's husband. She has also served on the boards of the Washington Center for Psychoanalysis and the Festival Center and has volunteered a year of her time treating children with severe malnutrition in Mexico. Most notably, Dr. Barnet proudly founded and continues to serve as a board member of The Family Place in Washington, a center for low-income parents and children that offers a variety of services. Established more than 30 years ago with several members of her parish, Church of the Saviour, she has since founded The Family Place Public Charter School in 2018.
Dr. Barnet received a Bachelor of Arts at Sarah Lawrence College in 1951. She subsequently attended Harvard University where she acquired a Doctor of Medicine in 1955. Additionally, she undertook a fellowship in the department of pediatrics at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston from 1958 to 1961. A member of the Southern Society of Pediatric Research and the Family Resource Coalition, Dr. Barnet is also a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics, with which she once served as a member of the D.C. executive chapter.
Dr. Barnet received several research and community service awards from organizations such as the National Institutes of Health, the Washington Center for Psychoanalysis and the Center to Prevent Childhood Malnutrition. She was recently named to the Washington Women's Hall of Fame in 2015. A celebrated Marquis listee, Dr. Barnet has been featured in the 17th edition of Who's Who of American Women.
