Mr. Donohue is an accomplished attorney with previous senior positions at the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission and in the financial services industry. Prior to embarking on his professional journey, he attended Hofstra University, graduating in 1972 with a Bachelor of Arts, cum laude with high honors in economics. He then attended New York University School of Law and earned a Doctor of Jurisprudence in 1975. Mr. Donohue was admitted to practice law in New York (1976) and New Jersey (1988).
In 1975 Mr. Donohue began his career with First Investors Corporation and over the next 14 years became one of the most senior executives there, serving as general counsel and as an officer and director of its affiliates, including as President and Director of the First Investors Family of Funds. He found further success with Oppenheimer Funds from 1991 to 2001, serving as Executive Vice President and General Counsel before briefly retiring in 2001. In 2003, Mr. Donohue returned to the industry as First Vice President & Global General Counsel at Merrill Lynch Investment Managers, where he remained until 2006.
Mr. Donohue then became the Director of the Investment Management Division of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission serving in that position from 2006 to 2010. In 2011 he joined Morgan Lewis and Bockius as a Partner and left in 2012 to join Goldman Sachs as Managing Director and Investment Company General Counsel. In 2015 he left Goldman Sachs and returned to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission as its Chief of Staff, a position he held until 2017. Mr. Donohue was then Of Counsel at Shearman & Sterling and an Independent Director of the Oppenheimer Funds until 2019. He has since joined the BNY Mellon Funds as an Independent Director.
