"I also take this opportunity to celebrate those who contributed to whatever success I have achieved and to recognize the members of my family whom I cherish. My dear wife, Gretchen, was well on her way to a promising career in medical research when she gave that up following the birth of our second daughter to stay at home to raise our children, Jennifer, Stephanie, and Vanessa. To her decision, I owe so much, and without her love, support, and encouragement I would not have succeeded. I also owe a large debt of gratitude to my elementary and high school teachers of the Lee School District in Wyoming, Michigan, who drilled us in the basics, encouraged us to succeed, opened vistas to be explored, and explained what seemed imponderable; to my college and law school professors at Grand Rapids Junior College and the University of Michigan; and to my parents who, by word and deed, taught me the values that have served me well. Finally, I honor Alex Brown, the Administrator of the Washington Regional Office of the Securities and Exchange Commission, who in 1970 gave me a job that started me on a long career."
