Having accrued more than 25 years of specialization in welfare services, geriatrics and mental health, Ms. Stocks retired from her position as a social services administrator in 1997. She began her career after successfully passing a state civil service examination. She was offered a position in the county's department of welfare, Ms. Stocks was impressed by the immense needs of the agency's clientele; and worked from 1972 until 1974 as a social worker for the Franklin County Welfare Department in Columbus. She became a social worker at the Central Ohio Psychiatric Hospital in 1974, departing in 1976 to work as an aftercare liaison for the Columbus Area Community Mental Health Center. Between 1977 and 1980, Ms. Stocks maintained activity in a similar capacity at the North Central Mental Health Center of Columbus, and for Worthington Community Counseling Services from 1980 to 1981.
Ms. Stocks returned to the Central Ohio Psychiatric Hospital as a social worker from 1981 until 1985. She continued her career as a program specialist at the Ohio Department of Mental Health between 1985 and 1993, and transitioned towards her final role as a special projects coordinator from 1993 until 1997. After her retirement, Ms. Stocks earned further distinction as a speaker in her field, presenting and writing about topics such as mental illness and treatment and vocational accommodations for psychiatric disability both prior to and following her retirement.
Before embarking upon her professional journey, Ms. Stocks attended Marietta College, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in psychology in 1971. She subsequently earned a Master of Social Work from Ohio State University in 1985. She is the co-author of "Ohio's Curriculum for Case Managers," published in 1995, as well as contributing numerous articles published in professional journals and self-help magazines. Ms. Stocks was a member of the Mental Health Association of Ohio, for which she has excelled as the chair of the state task force on stigma and mental illness, and formed and directed the IMPROV(E) OHIO Mental Health Players, and improvisational drama troupe comprised of people with psychiatric disabilities, family members and mental health professionals. This troupe provided education on mental health related topics to a range of community audiences.
