At the inception of his career in 1979, he served as a referrals director for Charter Medical Corp. for one decade prior to becoming a program director at Parkside Medical Service Corp. in Corpus Christi, Texas, and Merced and Concord, California. Holding the role until 1992, he was subsequently hired by Community Psychiatric Centers in Little Rock and Shreveport until 1994. Returning to Charter Medical Corp. for the following two years until 1996, he then became the executive director of the Louisiana Association on Compulsive Gambling. Retiring from this position in 2014, Mr. Middleton simultaneously served as the executive director of CORE-South and the Center of Recovery from Gambling Treatment Center in New Orleans for six years.
Alongside his primary career endeavors, Mr. Middleton has been a consultant to the Louisiana Office of Alcohol and Drug Abuse since 1997. A frequent presenter in the field, he has sat on the board of directors of the Northwest Louisiana Human Services District since 2017 and is a past board member of the Louisiana State University Gambling Advisory Board. Previously, he was a Baton Rouge commissioner for the Governor's Commission on Alcohol and Drug Abuse and a former host of the 11th National Conference on Gambling Behavior in New Orleans in 1997. Furthermore, Mr. Middleton is a former executive vice president of the National Council on Problem Gambling.
Certified in substance abuse counseling and compulsive gambling counseling, Mr. Middleton earned a Bachelor of Arts from Davidson College in 1957 and a Master of Arts in counseling from Louisiana Technical University in 1983. He has since contributed myriad articles to professional publications and maintained affiliation with numerous health care-related organizations. Mr. Middleton was recently named an emeritus member of the Advisory Board to the National council on Problem Gambling.
Likewise, Mr. Middleton is a past member of the National Association of Substance Abuser Counselors, the Louisiana Association of Substance Abuse Counselors and Trainers, and the Substance Abuse Counselor Organization, for which he was also the vice president. Furthermore, he has been involved in the Arkansas-Louisiana-Texas chapter of the Employee Assistance Professionals Association. Mr. Middleton is a former member of the Rotary Club of Shreveport.
As a testament to his success, Mr. Middleton received the Goldman Award from the National Council of Problem Gambling in 2006 and earned a special designation from the State of Louisiana House of Representatives for his contributions as executive director of the Gambling Service Association in 2015. Equally passionate about community theatre, Mr. Middleton was the recipient of the Times Drama Award from Gannet News in 1994 and 1995, for the role of "Big Daddy" in "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof," and won first place in the Louisiana Association of Community Theater in 1997.
