Dr. Van Tassell is renowned as a biology researcher and educator with more than 40 years of service to his students and discipline to his credit. He initially pursued an education at Wagner College, graduating with a Bachelor of Science in 1969. He subsequently obtained a Master of Arts from Adelphi University. He concluded his academic efforts at the City University of New York, where he earned a Master of Arts in 1996 and a Doctor of Philosophy in 1998. Motivated by the desire to inspire the next generation of scientists, Dr. Van Tassell prides himself in involving his students in his research.
From 1969 to 2000, Dr. Van Tassell excelled as a science teacher at H.F. Carey High School in Franklin Square, NY. During his tenure at H.F. Carey High School, he helped pilot not only advanced science classes, but a science research laboratory program, an accomplishment he considers a career highlight. He further found success as an ichthyology field associate for the American Museum of Natural History in New York City from 1976 to 1998. In this capacity, he conducted research trips in the Canary Islands. He was also the Principal Investigator for Earth Watch Research grants in the Canary Islands from 1989 to 1995. Since 1998, Dr. Van Tassell has been active as a Resident Research Associate for the aforementioned museum's department of ichthyology.
Dr. Van Tassell has additionally flourished at Hofstra University as a member of faculty in the biology department from 1999 to 2008. Authoring numerous books and research publications, he has accepted grants from the National Science Foundation and the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute. Notably, he advised the H.F. Carey H.S Ecology club which developed the largest volume, longest lasting recycling program in NYS; developed a forest and pond ecosystem in the school court yard used to teach ecology and by migratory hawks and peregrine falcons; and worked with the United Nations Youth Environmental program, connecting students around the world by telecommunications. This resulted in the UN recognizing the Ecology club as one of the top 10 youth environmental groups in the world. The club expanded its programs by helping form the YouthCAN event at the American Museum of Natural History where over 1000 students from 10 countries presented workshops on environmental issues and solutions. YouthCAN lasted over 19 years. Likewise, Dr. Van Tassell is a member of the American Society for Ichthyology and Herpetology, the Ichthyological Society of Japan, and Sigma Xi.
