Since joining the faculty, the graduation rate has consistently ranked as one of the best among National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I schools. Recognized for her collaboration with student-athletes of all sports, she worked on a personal basis with every student-athlete and coach, and organized academic counseling for all NCAA athletes, which includes relaying information from faculty to the academic advisor regarding each student-athletes' attendance in class, grades, completion of assignments, participation and need for tutoring. Moreover, Dr. Fleming supports the mandatory study program for freshman student-athletes of all sports, which provides monitored study sessions, study habits workshops and tutorials designed to help students transition smoothly towards college.
Prior to joining the faculty of Xavier University, Dr. Fleming distinguished herself as the president of Trinity College in Washington. She also served as a faculty member and supervisor at Summit Country Day School in Cincinnati and as a Latin, English and social studies teacher at Mount Notre Dame High School in Reading, Ohio. In addition to her long and successful career in education, Dr. Fleming has notably continued her career as an esteemed attorney, having operated in private practice in the city of Cincinnati since 1989.
For more than three decades, Dr. Fleming has volunteered her legal services on various projects and as a board member of the Legal Aid Society. She has also served her local community as a board member of the Friars Club. Since 2014, Dr. Fleming has likewise worked with the nonprofit organization Casa de Paz, or "House of Peace." Founded in 2012 to offer hospitality to Latina women who have suffered domestic violence, the organization has currently relocated into a larger, rented house with much more space. Case de Paz provides visits and emotional support, as well as shelter, meals, access to phones, Wi-Fi, computers and transportation.
Dr. Fleming co-authored her first book with Laura Pulfer in 2014, titled "Out of Habit: My Life as Xavier University's Unlikely Point Guard." Affiliating at Xavier after a successful career as a high school administrator and the president of a prestigious college, Dr. Fleming cajoled and charmed a wide and diverse roster of talented athletes toward their college degree, during which she imparted many indelible life lessons throughout their journey. For her professional excellence, she was recognized as one of four Great Cincinnatians through the Cincinnati Chamber of Commerce. She was also presented with the Friars Award through the Friars Club in 2019. Dr. Fleming has been the subject of an Associated Press feature story, been praised in Readers Digest and Women's Day, was voted one of the Cincinnati Enquirer's Women of the Year and was the subject of a promotional spot on The Family Channel.
Highly educated, Dr. Fleming completed a Bachelor of Arts at Mount Saint Joseph-on-the-Ohio in 1954, followed by a Master of Arts in English at the University of Detroit in 1964 and a Master of Art in education at Xavier University in 1969. She later acquired a Doctor of Philosophy in educational administration at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, in 1973, a Master of Business Administration at Xavier University in 1984 and a Doctor of Jurisprudence at Northern Kentucky University in 1988. She was admitted to practice by the Ohio Bar Association in 1989 and is a member of the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur, an institute operating to serve the poor under the auspices of the Roman Catholic Church, since 1954.
