Now an emeritus professor and former administrator, Dr. Torres-Labawld celebrates more than 35 years in academia. Retiring in 2002 from Hocking College in Nelsonville, he garnered a laudable reputation as the Director of Institutional Research between 1975 and 2002 and the Director of the General Studies Department between 1973 and 1975. Dr. Torres-Labawld also held teaching appointments at Ohio University in Athens, Ohio, Knox College in Galesburg, Illinois, and Indiana University in South Bend, Indiana and was a research associate at The Ohio State University's Mershon Center for International Security Studies. Dr. Torres-Labawld is currently a consultant in D'Angelo's Coffees, LLC, since 2002 and is the President and a business consultant of IMSA, LLC, in Athens, Ohio.
Active with numerous civic organizations, Dr. Torres-Labawld has been the chairman of the Ohio University Christ the King Parish finance committee since 1992, a member of the LaRaza national council since 2001, an executive committee member of the Athens County Democratic Party since 2002, and a member of the International Lions Club since 1967, where he served as President of the Athens, Ohio chapter. In 2019 he was accepted as a member of the Sarasota Institute 21st Century Think Tank. He formerly contributed as a coordinator in the Youth for Understanding international youth exchange program of the U. S. State Department, was the director of the Transnational Business Program in the U.S., Mexico and Canada, and a member of the Athens County Democratic Party Central Committee. Dr. Torres-Labawld is likewise a member emeritus of the Association for Institutional Research. He has also been active with the U.S. Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, the Columbus Area Chamber of Commerce in Ohio, the World Trade Club and the Duke of Gloucester Society, among other professional organizations.
Born in Luquillo, Puerto Rico, Dr. Torres-Labawld studied locally, receiving a Bachelor of Arts, with cum laude honors, at Inter-American University in 1957. Shortly thereafter, he attained a Master of Public Administration in the U.S., from the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs of Syracuse University in 1959, and a Doctor of Philosophy at The Ohio State University in 1973, followed by postgraduate coursework at the Tuck School of Business of Dartmouth College between 1995 and 1996. Prior to entering college, Dr. Torres-Labawld served his country and the U.S. as a corporal in the U.S. Army, stationed in Korea, between 1951 and 1953. Dr. Torres-Labawld served the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico Government, in the Office of Personnel Management, Office of the Governor, during the years 1959 to 1961.
In 2018, Dr. Torres-Labawld was awarded the Ambassador of Freedom Medal by the government of South Korea, at the South Korea Embassy in Washington, D.C., and in 2015 received the Congressional Gold Medal from President Barak Obama in Washington, D.C. Other honors include a 2019 Honor Roll Certificate from the National World War II Museum and a 2003 National Leadership Award from the National Republican Congressional Committee. A celebrated Marquis listee, Dr. Torres-Labawld has been included in several editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Finance and Industry, Who's Who in Business and Who's Who in the World.
