Dr. Franklin is renowned as a computer and cognitive scientist, mathematician and professor emeritus who taught in the departments of mathematical sciences and computer science at the University of Memphis for more than 40 years. During his tenure, he chaired the department of mathematical sciences, co-directed the Institute for Intelligent Systems and was a Dunavant professor of computer science and W. Harry Feinstone interdisciplinary research professor. He formerly held teaching appointments at Carnegie-Mellon University, the University of Florida, the University of California Los Angeles and Tulane University between 1963 and 1972. Dr. Franklin was also a National Science Foundation postdoctoral fellow at the University of Washington in Seattle between 1963 and 1964.
A sought-after expert in his field, Dr. Franklin often conducted workshops and presentations and has served as a consultant in his field to such organizations as Innovision in Irvine, CA, and Challenger Corporation in Memphis. As a seasoned scientist, he has contributed multiple articles to scholarly journals since the 1960s, some of which are still being cited to this day. Additionally, Dr. Franklin has completed three edited volumes and authored the book "Artificial Minds" through the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Press in 1995.
Dr. Franklin acquired a Bachelor of Science in mathematics at the University of Memphis in 1959. He continued his studies at the University of California Los Angeles, where he earned a Master of Science in 1962 and Doctor of Philosophy in mathematics in 1963. Prior to obtaining his degrees, Dr. Franklin completed service in the U.S. Marine Corps between 1951 and 1953.
To remain aware of developments in his field, Dr. Franklin has maintained his affiliation with the Association for Computing Machinery, the American Association for Artificial Intelligence, the Cognitive Science Society and the International Neural Network Society. He is also a member of Sigma Xi, the Scientific Research Honor Society, and Pi Mu Epsilon. Dr. Franklin also flourished as a visiting professor at the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur and as a visiting member at the Mathematische Centrum in Amsterdam.
Recognized with various awards during his academic career, the University of Memphis honored Dr. Franklin with a SPUR Award each year 1989 and 1992. He was notably presented with a Meritorious Faculty Award from the college of arts and sciences in 1994 and a Board of Visitors Eminent Faculty Award in 1997.
