Dr. Yeaworth is renowned as a nurse and dean emeritus with a remarkable career spanning more than 60 years. She initially pursued her education at the University of Cincinnati (UC), earning a Bachelor of Science in nursing in 1951. After a hiatus for marriage and children, she earned a Master of Science in nursing in 1966, and a PhD in sociology in 1970, both at UC. Dr. Yeaworth has held an active license to practice nursing for 68 years. She has been able to maintain her license because of her practice as a Faith Community Nurse at her church and her participation in continuing education.
Dr. Yeaworth began her career as an assistant instructor at UC from 1951 to 1952 and an assistant head nurse at Cincinnati General Hospital from 1952-53. While giving her family a start, she served as a part-time instructor at the School of Nursing at Christ Hospital in Cincinnati from 1954 to 1964 before returning to the UC College of Nursing as an Assistant Dean, faculty member and one year as acting dean. Dr. Yeaworth flourished at UC until 1979, when she took advantage of the opportunity to become Dean and Professor at the University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC) College of Nursing.
After 15 years as Dean in Nebraska, Dr. Yeaworth retired from the dean position in 1994, took a sabbatical, and took post graduate education in data management and geropsychiatry before doing some half-time teaching until 1999 when she fully retired from UNMC. Moreover, she has notably provided her professional expertise to various advisory boards and committees, having consulted for the University of Illinois' Nurse Faculty Research Development and Midwest Database Projects. Likewise, Dr. Yeaworth was formerly active as a member of the Nebraska Legislative Commission's task force on nurse practitioner licensure.
As a testament to her wealth of knowledge, Dr. Yeaworth has contributed extensively to professional journals and texts. Additionally, she is proud to have helped organize Nebraska's first education and outreach programs for spouses or family members and persons with early-onset dementia. Recognized as a fellow of the American Academy of Nursing, Dr. Yeaworth has assisted in the writing of or has served as project manage on several federal grants, including one which helped establish one of the first master's programs in gerontological nursing at the University of Cincinnati.
