Mr. Edgar fell in love with airplanes and piloting as a young child, his mother having bought him a Charles Lindbergh model airplane, flight goggles and a leather flight jacket. Is parents separated and he was raised by his mother with the help of relatives through grade school. He accepted the Lord Jesus and trusted Him at age ten. He dropped out of high school after the tenth grade, and got a job to help his mother. He continued studying and learning whatever he thought might be helpful. He passed the high school GED test and earned certificates in Auto Tech, and other fields. He was drafted into the Army (Korean War) 1950 and was granted the GI Bill when he was discharged in 1952. Then he was able to go to college and start his career in Engineering.
Deciding to delve into the aerospace engineering industry as a young adult, he received a Bachelor of Science in mechanical engineering and machine design from Heald College in San Francisco in 1955, followed by a Bachelor of Science in electrical engineering and feedback control systems from West Coast University in Los Angeles, California, in 1967. Later on, he continued his studies with the university and earned a Master of Science in systems engineering and systems management in 1969. After gaining prominence in his field, Mr. Edgar studied toward a doctoral degree in business administration and personnel management from United States International University, completing everything except his dissertation in 1988.
He doesn't want anyone who reads this to think it was easy, but hard yet possible for those who trust in God and keep trying. From 1955 to 1989: Mr. Edgar was a longtime engineer with NAA LA and the NAA Rockwell International Corp. in Downey, California, having simultaneously served as the manager and owner of Burton's Professional Services in Altadena from 1971 to 1989. Alongside his primary endeavors, from 1955 to 1963 he served the NAA Aircraft division LAD as design engineer of the Surface Controls group, X15 Aeroscpae craft, XB70 Supersonic Boomer, and senior design engineer of the GSE systems group. He was a systems design engineer for North American Rockwell from 1964 to 1971 and then served the Rockwell International Corp. as the supervisor of hydraulics analysis and testing of the space shuttle from 1973 to 1978. Thereafter, Mr. Edgar was a manager of hydraulics systems from 1979 to 1984 and senior project manager of mechanical fluid systems from 1985 to 1989.
Civically involved as well, from 1970 to 1973, Mr. Edgar worked as a part time math teacher's aid at UCLB for the NAA Rockwell Community Outreach Program SD. He has been serving as a consultant engineer for the Altadena Town Council since 1992, having formerly served as deacon and president of the long-range planning committee with the Lincoln Avenue Baptist Church in Pasadena, California, in 1974. He has also been a board member of Christian Men and Women in Action since 1986. Earlier in his career, Mr. Edgar served with the United States Army in South Korea from 1950 to 1952. From 1997 to 2002, he served as a substitute teacher in the PUSD.
In an effort to share his wealth of knowledge with the engineering community, Mr. Edgar co-authored the WCU Systems Annual Journal in 1969 and the book "Servo Control VLVS Design" in 1959. Additionally, he has maintained a fellowship with the Rockwell Management Club and has been acting as president of the Altadena Seniors Golf Club since 1992. In the past, Mr. Edgar was the vice president of the Altadena Optimist Club in 1993.
In light of his myriad accomplishments, Mr. Edgar has accrued numerous accolades and honors. Selected to the First Flight Team Apollo for NASA's Johnson Space Center in Clearlake, Texas, in 1969, he received the Excellence in Leadership Award from NASA's Johnson Space Center and Rockwell International Corp. in 1980 and a Group Achievement Award for the First Space Shuttle Flight from NASA's Johnson Space Center in 1983. Later on in his career, Mr. Edgar was presented with a Certificate of Honor from Glorious Praise Christian Academy in 1992.
Married to Rose Iva Chatman since 1970, Mr. Edgar has seven children and 18 grandchildren. In his spare time, he enjoys fishing, golfing, hunting, sailing and playing guitar. Mr. Edgar has been highlighted in the 25th and 26th editions of Who's Who in the West.
