With more than 40 years of experience to his credit, Dr. Dudley is currently retired, having excelled as the senior executive service director for the Naval History and Heritage Command, formerly known as the U.S. Naval Historical Center, from 1995 to 2004. Prior to this appointment, he worked at the Naval History and Heritage Command as a senior historian between 1990 and 1995, the head of the early history branch from 1982 until 1990 and a supervising historian from 1977 to 1982. Previously, he served as an assistant professor in the department of history at Southern Methodist University and the University of Texas at Dallas. Dr. Dudley began his career as a history teacher for the Poly Prep Country Day School in Brooklyn between 1963 and 1966.
Before embarking on his professional path, Dr. Dudley pursued an education at Williams College, earning a Bachelor of Arts in 1958. He continued his academic efforts with a Master of Arts at Columbia University in 1966. Following these accomplishments, Dr. Dudley concluded his studies at the aforementioned university in 1972, graduating with a Doctor of Philosophy.
From 1959 to 1967, Dr. Dudley served on active duty in the U.S. Navy Reserve, ascending to the rank of Lieutenant before resignation from active duty. During this time he was head of the Communications, Combat Information, and Operations Departments on board the USS Cromwell between 1960 and 1962. Subsequently, he held the position of Assistant Communications Officer of the Cruiser-Destroyer Force, Atlantic Fleet, during 1962-1963, based at Newport, R.I. After leaving active duty, Dr. Dudley was a member of the Select Reserve crews of the USS John R. Pierce and USS The Sullivans during 1964 -1967, based at the Brooklyn Navy Yard.
Dr. Dudley's manifold responsibilities at the Naval Historical Center included working as series editor of two multi-volume documentary publications, as Naval Documents of the American Revolution, and The Naval War of 1812: A Documentary History. After retirement, Johns Hopkins University published his Maritime Maryland: A History in 2010. He co-authored The Naval War of 1812: America's Second War of Independence published by the U.S. Naval Academy in 2013. As of 2005, Dr. Dudley joined the editorial advisory board of Sea History magazine. In addition, he found ample success in publishing numerous articles in academic journals and other periodicals.
Furthermore, Dr. Dudley was affiliated with several organizations in relation to his areas of expertise. He was elected as president of the American Revolution Round Table of the District of Columbia for 1987-89, the Society for History in the Federal Government for 1989-1990, and the North American Society for Oceanic History for 1999-2003. He became a corresponding member of the Massachusetts Historical Society and served on the Maryland Historical Society's Maritime Committee which he chaired from 2005 to 2011. Dr. Dudley was appointed to the Maryland Advisory Committee on Archaeology, serving from 2005 to 2015. He served as a member of the board of the Annapolis Maritime Museum from 2002 to 2006, was the Historian General of the Naval Order of the United States from 2007 to 2011 and served on the boards of the Naval Historical Foundation, the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum and the National Maritime Historical Society.
In light of his exceptional undertakings, Dr. Dudley has accrued several accolades throughout the length of his career. Throughout the 1990s, he was recognized with the Thomas Jefferson Prize from the Society for History in the Federal Government, the Samuel Eliot Morison Award from the USS Constitution Museum and the President's Award from the National Trust for Historic Preservation. He was later presented with a Superior Civilian Service Award from the United States Navy in 2004, the Special Recognition Award from Surface Navy Association in 2005 and a K. Jack Bauer Award from the North American Society for Oceanic History in 2005. He additionally accepted a John Lyman Award in 2011, a Maryland Preservation Award in 2011 and a Commodore Dudley W. Knox Naval History Lifetime Achievement Award from the Naval Historical Foundation in 2014. Likewise, Dr. Dudley was selected for inclusion in many editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in the East and Who's Who in the World.
Raised on the south shore of Long Island, Dr. Dudley's natural attraction to the water and passion for history inspired him to seek a career in the U.S. Navy and, by extension, in military history. Proud of the establishment of the Underwater Archaeology Branch during his time at the Naval Historical Center, he is pleased with having been involved with the management and recovery of artifacts of the CSS Alabama and the intact recovery of the submarine H.L. Hunley. He also fondly recalls his naval service, his experiences in higher education, and his exemplary efforts in publishing naval documents as the highlights of his career. Looking toward the future, Dr. Dudley hopes to continue advocating for the publication of historical documents while completing and releasing his latest work, "Inside the U.S. Navy of 1812-1815."
