Dr. La Rosa has dedicated himself to the academic practice of anatomic and clinical pathology since his initial years as a medical student in the early 70's at the National University of "Federico Villarreal" in Lima, Peru, and later on during his residency training in pathology at the "San Marcos" Major National University in Lima (1977 to 1979) and the University of Colorado in Denver (1992 to 1995). He is currently dedicated to the sub-specialties of genitourinary, renal, cardiac, and informatics pathology and has been a member of the medical staff at the University of Colorado Hospital since 2005, a faculty member of the Department of Pathology, University of Colorado since 1995, and an honorary professor at the National University of Federico Villarreal since 2003.
Prior to these roles, he worked as a laboratory director for Miners' Colfax Medical Center in Raton, New Mexico (1996 to 2000), and as an R&D Medical Consultant for REAADS Medical Products Inc. in Denver (1991). He initiated his work at the University of Colorado as a fellow in transplantation immunology (1981 to 1985), followed by appointments as an instructor (1985 to 1987), assistant professor (1987 to 2002) and associate professor (2009 to date).
Before immigrating to the United States in 1981, Dr. La Rosa lived in Lima, Peru; in preparation for his career in pathology, he earned a Doctor of Medicine from the National University "Federico Villarreal" (1975), devoting his last year of medical studies as an intern in surgery and medicine at the Arzobispo Loayza Hospital, in obstetrics and gynecology at the Maternity Hospital, and in pediatrics at the Children's Hospital, all in Lima. After his graduation, he parlayed his expertise as an immunology consultant for Ortho Pharmacy (1979 to 1981). He also worked in a private practice (1978 to 1981) where he specialized in clinical pathology and cytopathology. During this time, he alternated his clinical practice working as a faculty member of the Department of Basic Sciences at the National University "Federico Villarreal" (1973 to 1981), teaching immunology and microbiology, and reaching the rank of assistant professor.
He has since continued his medical education in the United States and has undergone additional training in both heart transplant pathology (2015) and renal pathology (2011) at Columbia University, as well as immunology, molecular pathology of lung cancer, prostate pathology and renal pathology at the University of Colorado. Furthermore, Dr. La Rosa holds medical licensure in the state of Colorado since 1995, is certified in anatomic and clinical pathology by the American Board of Pathology (1995), and passed the federal licensing examination by the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (1991).
Dr. La Rosa's activities as an academician include his graduation from the Teaching Scholar program at the University of Colorado (2005 to 2007), the publication of more than 95 articles in referee journals, the creation and editing of more than a dozen of web sites for medical education, more than 100 presentations of abstracts and posters in national and international medical meetings, and keynote speaker in several national and international congresses and courses. As a prime advocate for the diffusion of telehealth and telemedicine in the poorest regions of Latin-America, he was one of the founders (2011), past-president (2003-2015) and now the current administrator of the "Asociación Iberoamericana de Telesalud y Telemedicina – AITT (Ibero-American Association of Telehealth and Telemedicine), and the president of the "1st International Congress of Telehealth and Telemedicine" held in Lima, Peru (2014). He is also the creator (2012) and current Editor in-chief of the Journal "Revista de la AITT" (ISSN: 2411-3840). In addition, Dr. La Rosa is a leader and activist on the protection of human life from conception to natural death, being the faculty sponsor of two student associations at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus, and member of the board of the Denver Catholic Medical Association.
Due to his excellence in the medical field, Dr. La Rosa has earned numerous awards such as the Inspector Excellence Award from the College of American Pathologists (2018) and the Honorary Professor Award from the University "Federico Villarreal' in 2003. He has also earned a Fellowship Award from the National Cancer Institute's Program of Oncology Research Excellence (1996) and the Various Excellence in Teaching Awards in Pathology from the University of Colorado Medical School (1994 to 2009). As a testament to his success, Dr. La Rosa has been featured in multiple editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, Who's Who in the West, and Who's Who in the World.
